Power Grid Corporation Urges Cable Manufacturers to Scale Production
Rising renewable energy and data center demand drive massive transmission infrastructure investment in India.
1Infrastructure Investment Surge
Power Grid Corporation of India intends to exceed its previous financial year capital expenditure of ₹40,000 crore. This aggressive spending aims to bolster national transmission infrastructure. Chairman Vamsi Rama Mohan Burra indicated that current investment guidance will likely be revised upwards, reflecting the urgent need to support rapidly increasing national electricity demand.
2Drivers of Transmission Demand
The expansion is fueled by three primary factors: the integration of renewable energy capacity, rapid urbanisation, and the rising power consumption of data centres. These sectors require robust transmission networks to connect generation hubs with consumption centres. Consequently, the electrical equipment sector faces a substantial, sustained increase in long-term order volumes.
3Call to Domestic Manufacturers
Chairman Burra has explicitly urged domestic cable and wire manufacturers to scale production capacity immediately. Beyond volume, he emphasized the necessity of improving product quality and ensuring timely order execution. This alignment is critical, as the transmission sector represents a major consumer segment, with some manufacturers deriving one-third of demand here.
4Strategic Industry Interconnection
The growth of India’s transmission infrastructure is now inextricably linked to the success of the electrical manufacturing industry. Burra noted that without efficient transmission evacuation, electricity generators cannot effectively sell their power. This dependency makes the synchronization of transmission development with renewable energy capacity additions a vital priority for the sector.
5Technical and Execution Challenges
Transmission planning is becoming increasingly complex due to substation concentration and the need to evacuate renewable energy. While renewable projects develop quickly, transmission infrastructure faces longer timelines. Issues such as land availability, right-of-way restrictions, and the difficulty of constructing new lines alongside existing networks often cause significant project completion delays.
6Market Scale and Opportunities
The Indian wires and cables industry is valued at over ₹1 lakh crore. Emerging growth areas include underground and submarine cables, which are essential for modernizing the grid. Furthermore, the Green Energy Corridor-III programme, involving approximately ₹1.86 lakh crore in investments, presents a massive, specific opportunity for domestic manufacturers to supply equipment.
7Operational Performance Metrics
During the previous financial year, India added approximately 5,000 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 72,000 MVA of transformation capacity. These figures highlight the scale of ongoing development. Burra expects this momentum to continue, urging companies to focus on strengthening technological capabilities and developing comprehensive solutions to ensure long-term power reliability.
8Future Reliability Outlook
Transmission networks are evolving beyond simple connectivity to become critical infrastructure that determines overall power-sector reliability. As India strengthens its grid, the focus shifts toward consistent product reliability and supply chain resilience. Manufacturers who successfully align with these infrastructure requirements will likely secure a dominant position in the expanding Indian energy market.
