1Transformation of a historic building

A-nrd studio renovated a 19th-century Glasgow townhouse using raw materials that celebrate the city's industrial heritage. In this Victorian building converted to a hotel in 1999, later additions were stripped away to reveal the original structure. Project director Alessio Nardi states, 'We wanted Arthouse to feel like it always belonged to the city.'

2Preservation of original features

Original elements like the birdcage lift, stained-glass windows, and tiled walls were carefully restored. High Victorian ceilings and proportions create spaciousness, while exposed brick walls and wooden floors contrast with modern repair materials. This approach establishes a deliberate dialogue between old and new.

3Collaboration with local artisans

The 76 guest rooms feature bespoke elements like handmade coat hooks by West House Pottery. Glasgow glass artist Vicky Higginson designed wall lamps for bedrooms. The project extensively involved local artists and makers, strengthening the hotel's organic connection to the city.

4Design of public spaces

Deep olive tones dominate the hotel's common areas. Custom seating upholstered in sage-green fabric by Kirkby Design blends with vintage furniture. The sculptural wooden reception desk and bespoke pendant lights in the lobby carry A-nrd's signature style, supporting the artist's studio-inspired intimate atmosphere.

5Celentano restaurant concept

Opposite the entrance, Celentano offers a pared-back bistro aesthetic. Reclaimed flooring, exposed brickwork, and glazed tiles maintain design consistency. The hand-hammered zinc-topped bar adds artisanal character. This space reflects the hotel's balanced approach to historic preservation and contemporary intervention.

6Reinterpretation of circulation spaces

The central stairwell and elevator connect to expansive green corridors. Here, green-painted walls contrast with original white Victorian tiles and terrazzo flooring. The lower ground floor, formerly a restaurant, is being converted into compact guest rooms, demonstrating adaptive reuse.

7Brand identity and storytelling

The hotel's former ArtHouse identity was revived. A-nrd's narrative-driven approach creates layered experiences reflecting Glasgow's artistic legacy. The project aligns with British hospitality brand Oberland's 'low intervention' philosophy, respecting the building's historical fabric while introducing contemporary elements.

8Contextually grounded design

Nardi emphasizes, 'Every decision considered the existing architecture.' The hotel invites guests to experience Glasgow through spaces that feel authentic and lived-in. Like A-nrd's London restoration projects, this design carries industrial heritage into the future while honoring the building's Victorian roots.
