Clicks Technology Revives Physical Keyboards for Modern Mobile Users
Former BlackBerry executives are launching hardware to restore tactile intentionality to smartphone communication.
1The Return of Tactility
Clicks Technology is challenging the dominance of touchscreen-only smartphones by reintroducing physical QWERTY keyboards. Co-founder Jeff Gadway, a former BlackBerry marketing director, argues that modern devices sacrificed essential utility for screen space. The company aims to restore a tactile, intentional experience for users who feel overwhelmed by current mobile design trends.
2Expanding Product Ecosystem
The company is launching two major hardware products this year: the Power Keyboard and the Clicks Communicator. The Power Keyboard is a magnetic, MagSafe-enabled accessory that functions as a power bank and input device. It connects to phones, tablets, or smart TVs, providing a versatile physical typing solution for various digital platforms.
3Targeting Digital Natives
Surprisingly, the appeal of physical keyboards extends beyond nostalgic executives to younger digital natives. Data from the original 2024 keyboard case launch indicates that 40 to 45 percent of buyers had never used a BlackBerry device. This demographic is increasingly seeking analog-style experiences, similar to their growing interest in vinyl records.
4The Communicator Concept
The Clicks Communicator is a dedicated Android 17 device designed specifically for communication rather than endless content consumption. It features a 4.03-inch 120Hz screen paired with a physical keyboard. By limiting screen real estate, the device discourages doomscrolling on platforms like TikTok, effectively positioning itself between a dumbphone and a premium smartphone.
5Technical Specifications
The Communicator is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor and includes 12GB of RAM. It offers 256GB of internal storage, expandable via a microSD card slot. Additionally, the device retains legacy hardware features often missing from modern flagships, such as a 3.5mm headphone jack, catering to users who prioritize functional, hardware-based connectivity.
6Purposeful Software Integration
Clicks is collaborating with Niagara to develop a custom Android launcher that prioritizes message triage. Users can scroll through notifications and perform actions like deleting or replying directly from the home screen using the physical keys. This design choice aims to prevent users from getting distracted by secondary apps during their daily tasks.
7Focus Through Hardware
The device includes a customizable signal light to help users identify incoming calls or messages from specific contacts. This feature allows for immediate filtering of urgent communications versus spam. By integrating such hardware-level focus tools, the company hopes to help users maintain productivity and avoid the common pitfalls of modern mobile usage.
8Market Positioning Strategy
While touchscreens remain the industry standard, Clicks identifies a significant niche for intentional, tactile technology. The company successfully transitioned from a niche throwback brand to a provider of functional productivity tools. Their strategy proves that a substantial audience exists for hardware that prioritizes focused communication over the standard content-heavy smartphone experience.
