Felipe Hess' Minimalist Villa Design

A concrete-clad residence redefining simplicity in São José dos Campos

1Site Constraints and Context

The 520 m² villa is situated within an established gated community in São José dos Campos. Its design responds to the narrow street frontage caused by adjacent houses. Architects treated these limitations as key design parameters. Pre-existing structural elements on the plot were thoughtfully incorporated into the new composition.

2Material Palette and Textures

Concrete serves as the primary material, with surfaces left unpainted to maintain purity. This minimalist approach highlights the geometric clarity of volumes. Felipe Hess team aimed to create spatial integrity through material honesty. The tactile quality of raw concrete defines the architectural character.

3Volumetric Composition

The orthogonal structure features precise geometric subtractions that define its identity. This strategy achieves visual harmony with neighboring buildings while creating dynamic interior spaces. Transitions between rectangular volumes demonstrate meticulous attention to proportion and scale.

4Interior Design Philosophy

Collaborating with Patricia Sturm, the team extended the minimalist material palette indoors. Functional simplicity guides furniture selection. Open-plan living areas benefit from strategically placed windows that optimize natural light penetration throughout the day.

5Architectural Photography

Fran Parente's photographs emphasize the project's material textures and spatial relationships. Play of light and shadow on concrete surfaces particularly captures the building's essence. Each image documents how the structure changes character throughout daylight hours.

6Design Team Collaborations

Led by Felipe Hess and Pia Quagliato with contributions from Thais de Freitas, the project gained international exposure through Vestigare Agency's PR efforts. The team is recognized for their poetic use of concrete in previous works. This project continues their exploration of material authenticity.

7Contribution to Regional Architecture

Located in Vila das Acacias, the residence offers a contemporary interpretation of local architectural language. While referencing Brazil's modernist heritage, the design addresses contemporary living needs. It achieves harmony with neighboring structures while maintaining distinct identity.

8Significance of Architectural Approach

The project demonstrates how constraints can become design opportunities. This residence provides important references for urban housing by balancing neighborhood context with innovative solutions. Its minimalist materiality sets an example for sustainable architectural practice in residential design.
