Apple may restrict leased devices for missed payments
iOS 27 code suggests Apple could block access to unpaid devices.
1Apple's new leasing program
Apple plans to launch a new leasing program called 'Apple Upgrade' in the US. This program will allow customers to use devices like iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch with lower monthly payments. The program will be financed in partnership with Klarna.
2Lease terms and options
The lease term for iPhone and Apple Watch will be 24 months, while for Mac and iPad, it will be 36 months. Customers can purchase the device before the lease ends or upgrade to a new model for an additional fee. At the end of the term, they can keep or return the device.
3What is Restricted Mode?
iOS 27 beta code reveals that Apple could restrict devices with missed payments. A system called 'Restricted Mode' will block access to most apps when payments are delayed. However, essential apps like Health, Phone, and Settings will remain accessible.
4App exceptions
Restricted Mode may maintain access to apps that send critical alerts, such as Messages, Home, and certain medication reminders. However, the financing provider will have control over these exceptions. App Store subscriptions will not be canceled during the restriction.
5Partner Finance Lock
A new activation lock called 'Partner Finance Lock' will prevent restricted devices from being erased, resold, or stripped for parts. This lock will reside within the Find My app, but the financing provider will not have access to the device's location.
6Why are these changes important?
Apple's move will ensure tighter tracking of payments in leasing programs. It will also prevent misuse of devices by customers. This system will create a safer environment for financing providers while increasing accountability among users.
