The Army Is Rapidly Depleting Its AI Tokens
The U.S. Army has hit its AI token usage limit.
1Token Depletion Alarm
The U.S. Army has urged its employees to limit their usage of AI tokens after rapidly depleting them on the Ask Sage platform. Despite promises of unlimited tokens in May 2026, they were exhausted by mid-June.
2Ask Sage Platform
Ask Sage is an AI platform that runs multiple language models (LLMs). The Army's access is provided through an annual enterprise pack of 100 million tokens. One token equates to approximately 3.7 characters.
3What Are Tokens?
Tokens are units used in AI models for text or visual outputs. In platforms like Ask Sage, each token represents a certain number of characters and determines usage costs.
4Reasons for Overuse
Army employees were allocated at least 200,000 tokens per month, with additional tokens automatically provided when limits were exceeded. Employees who didn't use their tokens were encouraged via emails.
5Operational Impacts
During the 38-day Operation Epic Fury in Iran, the Department of Defense consumed approximately 20 billion tokens daily. This highlights the intensity of token usage in operational contexts.
6Future Token Policy
It remains uncertain whether tokens will be renewed after October 2026. While the Army has chosen to maintain current usage levels, future token policies are still unclear.
