Cloudflare Introduces Programmable Secure Web Gateway and DLP
Integrate custom edge logic directly into security policy evaluation for advanced traffic control.
1Limitations of Traditional Gateways
Traditional secure web gateways rely on binary actions like allow, block, or isolate based on static matching. This model has served network security for nearly 30 years but fails to address complex enterprise environments. Organizations currently hit a functional ceiling, forcing them to deploy auxiliary infrastructure to handle custom security requirements.
2Defining True Programmability
Most security vendors define programmability through public APIs or webhooks, which are insufficient for real-time needs. True programmability requires executing arbitrary, environment-specific code inline during the policy evaluation path. Cloudflare is now enabling this by integrating its edge computing platform directly into Gateway and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) security workflows.
3The Infrastructure Trade-off
Security teams historically faced a binary choice between maintaining custom proxy infrastructure for flexibility or accepting vendor constraints. Managing NGINX proxy pools for header manipulation or building complex logging pipelines creates significant operational overhead. Cloudflare aims to eliminate this burden by allowing custom logic to run directly on their global edge network.
4Unified Edge Compute Architecture
Cloudflare runs both customer compute via Workers and security policy enforcement on the same machines across 330+ locations. Because Gateway and Workers share the same infrastructure, dispatching traffic is a local function call. This eliminates network hairpinning and avoids the latency penalties associated with stitching together disconnected, third-party cloud security services.
5Forward Action Capabilities
The new Forward action allows administrators to route matched HTTP requests to a Worker as middleware. This enables real-time traffic transformation, such as modifying headers or request bodies before they reach the origin. It provides a proxy-like extension point for security stacks without the operational cost of hosting traditional HTTP proxy servers.
6Custom Functions for Evaluation
Custom Functions allow inline policy evaluation by calling a Worker during the rule-matching phase. The Worker returns a typed value—string, number, or boolean—which becomes a selector in the Gateway policy builder. This enables complex, dynamic logic, such as parsing JWT claims to determine user roles, directly within the security policy engine.
7Layer 4 and Protocol Support
Custom functions are not restricted to HTTP traffic. Because they receive identity, device posture, and connection metadata, they can be utilized in the Gateway Network policy rule builder. This allows administrators to apply arbitrary logic to Layer 4 port and protocol traffic, expanding the scope of programmable security beyond simple web requests.
8Purpose Justification Workflows
Organizations can now build interstitial pages that require users to provide written justification before accessing sensitive destinations. By integrating with Cloudflare KV for session management and D1 for auditing, security teams can create robust, automated audit trails. This addresses a long-standing request for more granular, context-aware access control mechanisms.
9Real-time Alerting and Inspection
Workers bound to Forward policies can trigger asynchronous actions upon policy matches. For example, a file download can be sent to a third-party sandbox for detonation or written to Cloudflare R2 for permanent storage. This allows for real-time alerting via Slack or PagerDuty without relying on delayed SIEM-based log pipelines.
10Handling Complex Risk Scoring
Traditional firewall expression builders struggle with behavioral analysis or complex user-group mapping. Custom functions act as a computational extension, evaluating multiple data sources to return a single risk score to the Gateway. This allows security teams to implement sophisticated, proprietary risk models without needing to maintain separate, external evaluation engines.
11Performance and Reliability
Since dispatching to a Worker occurs locally, the performance impact is limited solely to the execution time of the custom code. Developers must configure fallback behaviors for exceptions or timeouts to ensure reliability. The contract is deterministic: data in, value out, ensuring that security policies remain predictable even with custom logic.
12Availability and Future Outlook
The Forward action is currently in public beta, while Custom Functions are scheduled for release before the end of the year. Upon general availability, these features will be accessible to all customers across all plan types. This shift represents a move toward infinitely extensible security architectures that adapt to evolving threats.
