This update preserves storage identities when virtual machines migrate between servers. The PCIe Exported NVM Subsystem Migration feature transforms physical drives into virtual subsystems. Applications can now continue running without interruption during VM migrations, marking a significant advancement in storage technology. ## Key Insights from Samsung Executive Mike Allison, Senior Director at Samsung, explained how new NVMe features abstract storage complexity. VMs now interact with virtual interfaces rather than physical controllers. Allison emphasized that hardware changes won't affect VM performance. The preservation of identifiers during migration ensures critical application continuity in enterprise environments. ## Post-Quantum Cryptography Support The updated NVMe specifications include support for post-quantum cryptography, future-proofing storage systems against emerging threats. Additional features like controller-based rate limiting and voltage monitoring provide enhanced control. The factory reset capability offers system administrators new flexibility in managing storage infrastructure. These updates collectively represent a comprehensive security and management upgrade. ## Storage Technology Breakthrough NVMe specifications were specifically designed for storage devices connected via PCIe buses. The latest updates mark a significant milestone in the standard's evolution. Virtualization features will particularly benefit cloud computing and data center environments. Industry experts predict these advancements will fundamentally transform storage infrastructure management practices. ## Simplified Virtual Machine Management New NVMe features substantially reduce the workload for virtual machine managers (VMMs). Flash drives can now directly present virtual storage constructs. This eliminates VMMs' need to handle virtualization complexity. The technology was specifically designed and tested for large-scale virtual environments. ## Industry Reactions NVMe's new features have generated significant buzz in the storage industry. Experts highlight potential improvements in data center efficiency. The technology offers particular advantages for cloud service providers and corporate IT departments. Major tech companies plan to release products supporting the new specifications soon. ## Future Projections NVMe's virtualization features herald a new era in storage technology. Analysts predict the technology will become an industry standard within five years. It will play crucial roles in hybrid cloud environments and edge computing scenarios. Investors anticipate growing interest in NVMe-enabled storage solutions. ## Sector-wide Impact NVMe's new specifications promise revolutionary changes for data center infrastructures. The VM mobility advancements could redefine business continuity and disaster recovery. The technology also offers energy efficiency and hardware longevity benefits. Experts unanimously agree these updates will reshape the storage industry landscape. ## Sources covering this story - https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/26/08/04/2326236/nvme-polishes-its-specs-brings-virtualization-to-locally-attached-ssds?utm_source=rss1.0mainlinkanon&utm_medium=feed — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
