1The Revival of Forgotten Technology

BluHub reimagines the physical media culture of 1998-2006 for modern users. Its 409g aluminum body reads/writes Blu-ray, DVDs and CDs, while burning 100GB discs at 6x speed. Designed to meet demand after Sony discontinued recordable Blu-ray media in 2025, it brings back tangible data ownership in a cloud-dominated era.

2Design Details That Matter

Featuring a grand piano lid concept, the device displays a spare disc visibly while writing on the tray below. This design draws inspiration from Braun's 1956 SK4 acrylic cover and Muji's 2000 wall-mounted CD player. Measuring 165x160x34mm, it operates below 30dB noise level with anti-vibration feet for stability during burns.

3Connectivity Solutions

BluHub offers expandability with 4 USB 3.0 ports, SD and microSD slots, sharing a 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen2 connection. Integrated USB-C and USB-A cables prevent loss, addressing a common hub frustration. Compatibility spans Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iPadOS and Android (via OTG), making it versatile for various users.

4Pricing and Availability

Priced at $59 for Kickstarter backers (54% off $129 retail), BluHub offers bundles: $109 for two, $159 for three, and $259 for five units. Estimated November 2026 delivery includes $6-$7 US shipping, with international rates available. The campaign highlights only 6 days remaining for early bird pricing.

5Storage Market Context

With SSD prices doubling since late 2025 due to AI-driven NAND shortages (projected until 2027) and PlayStation ending physical disc production by 2028, BluHub positions itself as a strategic alternative. It transforms $5 discs into 100GB irrevocable storage, contrasting with volatile cloud subscription models.

6The Design Team's Vision

A three-person LA team saw opportunity in the optical drive market collapse following Pioneer's US exit. They aimed to modernize content ownership, creating a device that lets users physically control their digital assets. The design consciously rejects the industry's trend toward complete dematerialization.

7Technical Specifications

BluHub writes 100GB BD-R discs at 6x speed while functioning as a USB hub to maintain workspace efficiency. Its aluminum construction and portable form factor cater to both professional and home users. The built-in cable design solves a perennial USB hub issue - lost connection cables.

8The Future of Digital Ownership

As cloud costs rise and licensing makes content temporary, physical storage regains value. BluHub converts $5 discs into 100GB irrevocable storage, reinforcing true digital ownership. This approach offers not nostalgia but forward-looking data preservation strategy in an era of digital impermanence.
