The Hidden Heart Health Feature of Apple Watch
Monitor your heart rhythm in detail with the ECG app.
1What is ECG?
Apple Watch's ECG (electrocardiogram) feature provides much more detailed data than standard heart rate monitoring. It records the heart's electrical activity, analyzing each beat's phases. Available on Series 4 and later models (excluding SE) and all Ultra models. However, its use is restricted in some countries, particularly in Eastern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
2How It Works
For ECG measurement, wear your Apple Watch snugly and touch the Digital Crown for 30 seconds. Keep your arms still during measurement. You need the latest watchOS and iOS versions. Results may vary based on regional regulations, so check which app version you're using.
3Sinus Rhythm
Sinus rhythm result shows your heart beats regularly between 50-100 BPM. However, this only reflects the moment of measurement. It's not a continuous diagnostic tool. Consult a doctor if concerned. Sinus rhythm indicates proper function of the sinoatrial node, the body's natural pacemaker.
4Atrial Fibrillation
Known as AFib, this result indicates irregular heartbeat - the most common arrhythmia. If you receive this result without prior diagnosis, consult your doctor immediately. Apple Watch ECG isn't designed to detect heart attacks, only providing general rhythm information.
5Low/High Heart Rate
If your pulse is too low (below 50) or high (above 120 for v1, above 150 for v2), AFib scanning isn't possible. Stress, dehydration or medications may cause this. Consult a doctor for repeated results. Loose watch or movement during measurement can also affect results.
6Inconclusive Reading
This result appears when the recording can't be classified. May occur in pacemaker users or certain physiological conditions. In version 1, it may appear at 100-120 BPM without AFib. Loose watch or movement during measurement can also cause this.
7Poor Recording (Version 2)
Exclusive to version 2, this result stems from physical factors. Wet wrist/watch, loose fit, or excessive movement may cause it. Correct these factors and retry. Ensure proper fit for accurate measurement.
8Why It Matters
While not replacing professional medical devices, Apple Watch ECG is a valuable tool for regular heart rhythm monitoring. It can help detect common arrhythmias like AFib early. Always consult your doctor for abnormal results. This feature aims to raise awareness about heart health.
