Triangulated Steel Lattice Redefines Barcelona Logistics Park Entrance
Steel canopy design transforms the park's gateway into a landmark.
1Project Purpose
A new entrance gate was designed for the Zona Franca Logistics Park in Barcelona. This project not only meets a functional need but also redefines the concept of an infrastructural threshold. The design turns the entrance into a spatial and territorial marker for the broader landscape.
2Architectural Approach
MIAS Architects presented a design that goes beyond the traditional notion of a gate. The triangulated steel lattice forms an irregular, faceted volume. This structure houses the signage that identifies and brands the park. The modulation of the lattice follows a narrative logic, densifying and loosening along the frame.
3Structural Details
The roof is supported on a few slender steel columns, making the volume appear light and almost weightless. The roof unfolds like a suspended artificial topography, deforming and bending towards its extremities to hover above the traffic lanes. This design not only covers the vehicular flow but also visually organizes it.
4Scale and Impact
The design team conceived the entrance as an open system. This system mediates between territorial and human scales. It stakes a claim on the skyline with its outline and presence, yet appears almost suspended in air due to its details and supports. Thus, the entrance becomes a contemporary landmark for the Zona Franca Logistics Park.
5Material and Geometry
Despite using industrial materials and rigorous geometric construction, the project approaches a more organic condition. The triangulated steel lattice defines the irregular geometric volume of the structure. The lattice varies in density across the structure, resembling the outcome of a gradual evolutionary transformation.
6Environmental Integration
The entrance gate announces the site by framing the everyday choreography of vehicles moving through the logistics park. This design transforms infrastructure into an identifiable public marker. The steel lattice structure combines visual lightness with a strong civic presence.
7Architects' Vision
MIAS Architects reinterpreted the entrance as an architectural threshold. This design operates as an open system capable of producing unexpected richness from a reduced set of parts. The entrance mediates between territorial and human scales, creating a new icon for the logistics park.
