US Banks Enter Stablecoin Market: JPMorgan's Strategic Shift

Major banks change strategy as payment giants expand into the stablecoin arena.

1Major Banks' Unexpected Move

JPMorgan is evaluating launching its own stablecoin, according to a Wall Street Journal report on August 26. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Santander are developing a joint global stablecoin project. This marks a significant shift from banks' previous focus on tokenized deposits. JPMorgan already operates JPM Coin, a tokenized deposit product built on its Kinexys blockchain infrastructure.

2Changing Market Dynamics

The entry of non-bank companies like Visa, BlackRock, and Google into the stablecoin market has altered industry balances. New players in this space long dominated by Tether and Circle are forcing banks to act. According to S&P Global Ratings' June report, growth in stablecoin usage could significantly impact US banks. Risks would increase particularly if stablecoins become widely used for payments.

3Deposit Loss Concerns

Two-thirds of US bank executives surveyed by S&P Global Market Intelligence in July said they could lose deposits if consumers could earn rewards on stablecoins. Oliver Wyman's 2030 scenarios for Citi also predict stablecoin growth may increase banks' funding costs and reduce cross-border payment revenues. However, it could also create new revenue opportunities through redemptions and other services.

4Infrastructure Race Intensifies

The BankChain Alliance, formed by 39 US state banking associations, is building bank-owned infrastructure targeting a 2027 launch. Designed for tokenized deposits, stablecoins, and programmable payments, this initiative represents hundreds of financial institutions. Coming after other blockchain projects involving JPMorgan and Bank of America, this move clearly shows industry direction.

5$500 Billion Market Potential

JPMorgan Global Research projects the stablecoin market could reach $500-750 billion in coming years. Researchers also describe stablecoins as a potential settlement mechanism for tokenized assets. These projections explain why banks are turning to stablecoins: a growing market, increasing competition, and opportunities to be part of tokenized asset infrastructure.

6Regulation and Customer Demand

A JPMorgan spokesperson stated they would evaluate stablecoin issuance based on customer demand and evolving regulatory frameworks. Regulatory uncertainty remains a key risk factor for banks. According to S&P analysis, stablecoins currently pose limited direct threat to deposits as they're primarily used outside the US for settlement. But this could change if they become widely adopted for payments.

7Strategy Targeting Corporate Clients

The joint venture led by Bank of America plans to launch first with a dollar-denominated token before expanding to euro and other G7 currencies. This project specifically targets corporate clients. Banks' shift from tokenized deposits to stablecoins reflects the need to meet corporate clients' multi-currency requirements. The joint venture model also offers cost-sharing advantages.

8Turning Point for Banking Sector

Major banks' stablecoin moves are blurring lines between traditional banking and digital asset ecosystems. While facing deposit loss risks, banks also see new revenue opportunities, creating a strategic dilemma. Initiatives like the BankChain Alliance, planned for 2027, reflect banks' efforts to maintain infrastructure control in this new market. These developments mark a critical phase in financial sector transformation.
