1Project Framework

Completed in 2024 by Gurgel D'Alfonso Arquitetura, the Matisse Apartment encompasses a comprehensive renovation of a 360-square-meter unit in São Paulo's Moema district. The original 1990s structure featured a layout characterized by sharp angles and compartmentalized spaces. Architects Rogério Gurgel and Caio D'Alfonso updated this spatial language to create a more fluid and integrated living environment.

2Core Architectural Intervention

The project's focus was eliminating the existing rigid partitions to allow more natural light penetration. The open plan created by removing heavy dividers offers visual and physical continuity between spaces. Supported by products from Reynaers Aluminium and Sollos - Jader Almeida, the design addresses traditional spatial challenges with contemporary materials.

3Spatial Transformation Details

During renovation, the apartment's original split-level section was reduced to a single plane, improving accessibility. Monofloor's specialized flooring enhances spatial unity while artworks from Aalvo Gallery add character to walls. Dpot's furniture selections balance functionality and aesthetics.

4Design Philosophy

The architects aimed to create a living space 'sensitive to the passage of time,' reflected in spatial fluidity and material choices. Custom pieces from +55 Design bridge past and present, while Arthur Duarte's photographs document the transformation narrative.

5Material and Technology Application

Reynaers Aluminium's extensive glazing systems strengthened indoor-outdoor connections. Sollos - Jader Almeida's woodwork added natural warmth. Smart lighting solutions allow transformation of the space's atmosphere throughout the day.

6Spatial Relationships

Removing physical barriers between dining and living areas created a layout that enhances social interaction. The kitchen island serves practical functions without disrupting spatial continuity. Custom storage solutions in bedrooms combine minimalism with functionality.

7Environmental Context

Moema's green landscape enters the interior through expansive windows. The design harmonizes with the urban fabric while maintaining privacy-openness balance. Local material use reinforces the project's sustainability values.

8Architectural Heritage and Innovation

This project presents a contemporary interpretation of 1990s apartment architecture while illuminating São Paulo's urban transformation. Gurgel D'Alfonso's approach sets new standards for unlocking existing structures' potential. The intervention's success demonstrates the balance between preservation and renewal.
