Spanish Design Firm Transforms Iconic Nightclub into Acoustic Masterpiece

Clap Studio reimagines SPOOK with sound-absorbing pyramid forms and monochromatic blue aesthetics.

1The Challenge of Sound Containment

Containing sound in spaces like nightclubs or recording studios is notoriously difficult. Dead rooms, designed to absorb all sound reflections, require specialized materials and acoustic expertise. Clap Studio tackled this challenge by reimagining a room in Valencia's iconic SPOOK nightclub, focusing on achieving architecturally pure sound. The goal was crisp, clear, and direct audio, akin to a recording studio environment.

2Historical Significance of SPOOK

SPOOK has been a temple of techno for decades, part of La Ruta del Bakalao, an 18-mile club circuit along the CV-500 highway. This legendary route captivated Spain and Europe's electronic dance scenes in the 1980s and 90s. The club's redesign by Clap Studio pays homage to its rich history while modernizing its acoustic and aesthetic appeal. The project preserves traces of SPOOK's past while reshaping it for a new era.

3Acoustic Pyramid Design

The 1,500-square-foot space features spiky pyramid forms extending from the ceiling, pillars, and walls. These pyramids are made of dark gray concrete and polyurethane foam, serving dual purposes as acoustic paneling and aesthetic elements. The design ensures sound is absorbed and directed, creating a pure audio experience. The austere energy of the interior is reinforced by these geometric forms.

4Monochromatic Blue Aesthetics

The updated SPOOK is coated in deep blue shades, from ultramarine surfaces to repainted pale blue speakers salvaged from the previous space. Lighting casts an indigo hue across the dance floor, while the bar emits a crisp ice blue glow. These intentional monochromatic choices create striking contrasts and a cohesive visual identity, enhancing the club's immersive atmosphere.

5Nods to 1980s Roots

Clap Studio incorporated custom-designed furniture from denim fabric scraps, paying respect to SPOOK's 1980s origins. The sofa and pouf reflect the club's broader approach of preserving its past while embracing modernity. This small but meaningful gesture ties the redesign to the venue's historical and cultural significance, blending nostalgia with contemporary design.

6Material Innovation

The use of polyurethane foam for acoustic paneling demonstrates Clap Studio's innovative approach to materials. This choice not only enhances sound quality but also contributes to the space's aesthetic. The combination of concrete and foam creates a tactile and visual contrast, adding depth to the club's interior design while fulfilling its functional acoustic requirements.

7Lighting as a Design Element

Lighting plays a crucial role in SPOOK's redesign, with indigo hues on the dance floor and ice blue at the bar. These lighting choices are intentional, creating a dynamic and immersive environment. The shifts in light within the monochromatic space add visual interest and contrast, enhancing the overall sensory experience for club-goers.

8A New Era for SPOOK

Clap Studio's redesign of SPOOK marks a new chapter for the iconic nightclub, blending acoustic innovation with aesthetic refinement. The project honors the venue's legacy while elevating its sound and visual experience. This transformation sets a benchmark for how historic music venues can be modernized without losing their cultural essence, ensuring SPOOK remains a destination for techno enthusiasts.
