STG Design Unveils Sinuous O27 Skyscraper in Houston
The 32-storey office tower features a unique triangular glass facade and fluid geometry.
1Project Overview and Location
STG Design has unveiled renderings for O27, a 32-storey skyscraper planned for the River Oaks area of Houston. The project features a nine-storey base with a parking garage and a tower characterized by an undulating form. Developers Broadview Capital aim to establish this building as a significant geographic marker for the neighborhood.
2Computational Design Methodology
The building's unconventional, sinuous shape resulted from an intensive computational design process. This technical approach prioritized highly efficient and repeatable floorplates despite the complex curved geometry. By avoiding rigid verticality, the architects created a structure that appears fluid and perpetually in motion, contrasting with typical contemporary office towers found in the city.
3Facade and Materiality
The exterior is defined by two curving glass facades divided by a central spine of terraces. These facades utilize triangular glass panels to form a shimmering skin that shifts appearance throughout the day. This design choice aims to capture changing light, enhancing the building's expressive and dynamic presence within the Houston skyline.
4Interior and Lobby Design
Design practice Design ALT + TAB developed the lobby and entrance areas. The entrance drive features a sculpted ceiling with embedded lights designed to evoke a night sky. Interior renderings reveal a sophisticated aesthetic, utilizing metallic bronze finishes, black-and-white marble surfaces, and curved seating arrangements to complement the building's overall fluid architectural theme.
5Developer Vision and Inspiration
Broadview Capital founders Anish and Ashay Bavishi drew inspiration from the iconic Williams Tower, designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee. The project seeks to embody ambition and global sophistication, reflecting the legacy of the River Oaks area. It serves as a tribute to the neighborhood's history of thoughtful planning and architectural distinction.
6Functional Building Components
The 32-storey structure is designed to house flexible office floors to accommodate diverse tenant needs. Beyond workspace, the building includes luxury amenities and a rooftop terrace situated atop the nine-storey podium. These features are integrated into the design to provide a high-end experience for occupants while maintaining the tower's unique aesthetic.
7Broader Houston Development Context
STG Design, founded in 1976 and based in Austin, is contributing to a wave of new architectural projects in Houston. Other notable developments in the city include OMA's conversion of a coffee plant into a music school and a performance space by Theaster Gates. These projects collectively signal ongoing investment in Houston's infrastructure.
8Timeline and Future Impact
Construction for the O27 skyscraper is expected to reach completion by 2028. As the project moves toward realization, it will test the viability of combining complex computational geometry with efficient, repeatable office floorplates. The building stands as a major addition to Houston's architectural landscape, emphasizing both aesthetic innovation and long-term urban relevance.
