Marvel's Future Remains Uncertain
Despite Spider-Man: Brand New Day's success, the MCU's future is in question.
1Record-Breaking Debut
Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed $1 billion at the box office, marking the biggest opening weekend in Hollywood history. This success once again proved that Sony won't give up the Spider-Man film rights. It also showed how right Marvel was to bring the character into its own films. However, this success isn't enough to save the MCU's overall situation.
2MCU's Decline
The MCU has been in a surprising slump for the past few years. Despite Brand New Day's success, there's no sign that Marvel has figured out how to get things back on track. While previous Spider-Man films were also successful at the box office, this movie shattered records to become one of Marvel and Sony's most successful collaborations. Yet, this success doesn't hide the MCU's general problems.
3Comic Book Appetite
Brand New Day proved that audiences still have an appetite for big-screen comic book adaptations. However, the secret to this success isn't found in the Marvel universe without Sony. The film was built on the foundations of Jon Watts' Spider-Man trilogy. The world built around Tom Holland's Peter Parker highlighted the character's evolution and managed to capture the audience's interest.
4Seeking Balance
Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, managed to strike a balance between Sony's solo Spider-Man films and Marvel's big crossover events. The film features classic villains like John Bernthal's Punisher and Michael Mando's Scorpion. But the story revolves around Peter dealing with the emotional consequences of erasing himself from the world's memory.
5Multiverse Problem
The MCU struggled to maintain narrative cohesion during the Multiverse Saga, which began with WandaVision and will end with Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel is trying to manage too many things at once in its shared universe of films and series. Sony, on the other hand, has paused making Spider-Man spinoff movies. But the mixed reactions to the studio's next big film's trailers show that audiences aren't exactly excited about upcoming projects.
6A Fresh Start
Avengers: Doomsday will bring Marvel heroes together once again to fight a version of Doctor Doom portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. The film will use the multiverse to explain why Doctor Doom looks exactly like Iron Man. It will also bring some of 20th Century Studios' live-action X-Men into the MCU. Marvel plans to put a period on the Multiverse Saga with Doomsday and next year's Avengers: Secret Wars and start fresh.
7X-Men's Future
Kevin Feige has stated that new iterations of the X-Men are key to Marvel's future plans. But if the studio wants audiences to truly connect with Charles Xavier and his students, it should focus on some of Brand New Day's strongest beats. Sadie Sink's Jean Grey is introduced as a teenager willing to destroy anyone who gets in her way as she searches for her sister. This could form the basis of human-mutant tensions.
8Marvel's Path
Brand New Day offers hope for the MCU's future by touching on classic X-Men comic elements. But it's unclear whether Marvel can sustain this success. The studio will have to put in more effort to capture the audience's interest. Otherwise, the MCU's future could be at risk. Marvel's next move will determine the franchise's fate.
