Currently playing for Monza, he leads the league as the sole 'Capocannoniere' with nine goals in nine matches. His rapid ascent has established him as one of the most prolific young forwards in European football today. ## Impressive Statistical Growth Acquired for 2.5 million euros this past summer, Varela has already surpassed his previous season's output of seven goals and three assists at Gil Vicente. His contract runs until 2030, reflecting the club's confidence in his development. He has also contributed two additional goals in the Coppa Italia competition this term. ## A Unique Family Duel A defining moment in Varela's career occurred on November 10, 2024, when he played against his father, Fernando Varela, in the Portuguese second division. The match provided an emotional experience for both, as they navigated the rare professional challenge of competing against each other while maintaining their deep personal bond and respect. ## Mentorship and Development Fernando Varela remains a pivotal figure in his son's career, acting as both his harshest critic and greatest admirer. Gustavo credits his father's guidance for improving his positioning, defensive work, and ability to win physical duels. This mentorship has been instrumental in shaping the disciplined work ethic he displays during training sessions. ## Humble Professional Approach Despite his current status as a league leader, Varela rejects the label of a superstar. He maintains a grounded perspective, focusing solely on his next match rather than setting long-term numerical targets. His coach, Ivan Juric, emphasizes that Varela possesses significant room for improvement due to his dedicated individual training habits. ## International Ambitions Emerge With Cristiano Ronaldo officially retiring from the Portuguese national team, the striker position has become a focal point for the squad. Varela, a former under-21 international, is now considered a primary candidate for a call-up. He aims to secure his place by maintaining his high performance levels for his club side. ## Competitive Selection Landscape National team manager Jorge Jesus faces a critical decision regarding the vacant striker role. Varela must compete against established talents like Gonçalo Ramos, currently at Milan, and Fábio Silva, who plays for Borussia Dortmund. His current form in Italy provides a strong argument for his inclusion in the upcoming national squad. ## Future Career Outlook Varela's journey from the youth ranks of Sporting CP and Benfica to the Italian top flight highlights his rapid development. As he continues to adapt to the demands of Serie A, his ability to handle pressure will determine his long-term success. His trajectory suggests he is a key prospect for Portugal. ## Sources covering this story - https://www.marca.com/futbol/liga-italiana/2026/11/06/gustavo-varela-jugar-padre-pichichi-serie-sustituto-cristiano-portugal.html — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
