1Trinity's sustainability flagship

The Lawson Centre represents Trinity College's most ambitious capital project in 60 years, combining academic offices, seminar rooms, and residential spaces across 14,450 m². Designed by Dutch firm Mecanoo with Toronto's RDHA, the hybrid mass timber structure will house 357 dorm beds in various configurations including barrier-free units. The project targets both LEED Platinum and CaGBC Zero Carbon Design certification, positioning it among Canada's most advanced sustainable academic buildings.

2Integrated campus ecosystem

Beyond dormitories, the facility incorporates a full-service cafeteria, teaching kitchen, event pavilion, and rooftop farm - creating a self-contained student experience. The design revitalizes Trinity's historic campus while introducing contemporary sustainability features. Academic spaces include specialized seminar rooms and student lounges designed to foster collaboration, with careful attention to acoustics by Aercoustics Engineering.

3Material innovation focus

The project showcases mass timber construction, combining structural efficiency with low carbon impact. RDH Building Science developed the building envelope systems, while Blackwell Structural Engineers handled structural design. Material selection emphasizes sustainability, with wood and brick playing prominent roles. Brothers Dressler fabricated custom tables, integrating local craftsmanship into the academic environment.

4Multidisciplinary engineering

Smith + Andersen led MEP, HVAC, fire safety and security systems, demonstrating the project's technical complexity. Valdor Engineering managed civil engineering aspects, while Footprint Consulting ensured sustainability benchmarks. The building integrates advanced systems for food services (designed by Food Forward) and wayfinding (by Entro), creating a seamless user experience across diverse program elements.

5Construction timeline

With Graham Construction as construction manager, the project is scheduled for completion in 2026. The timeline reflects the complexity of delivering a carbon-neutral, hybrid-use academic facility. Solucore serves as elevator consultant, addressing vertical circulation needs in the multi-program building. Photographic documentation by Doublespace Photography will capture the construction progress and final result.

6Sustainability benchmarks

The Lawson Centre sets new standards for Canadian academic architecture through its dual LEED Platinum and Zero Carbon certification goals. NAK Design Strategies handled local landscape integration, ensuring the building complements Trinity's existing campus. The rooftop farm and teaching kitchen create hands-on sustainability education opportunities, while the mass timber structure demonstrates low-carbon construction at scale.

7Student experience focus

The design prioritizes student wellbeing through varied study spaces, lounges, and dormitory configurations ranging from studios to doubles. Barrier-free typologies ensure accessibility across all functions. The event pavilion and cafeteria create social hubs, while seminar rooms and academic offices support Trinity's educational mission. This holistic approach blends residential and learning environments sustainably.

8Architectural collaboration model

The project demonstrates successful international partnership, with Dutch firm Mecanoo collaborating with Toronto-based RDHA. This combination brought global sustainability expertise together with local context understanding. The design preserves Trinity's collegiate character while introducing contemporary environmental solutions, creating a model for future campus developments balancing heritage and innovation.
