Minimalist Home Design for Art Collectors
Habitat Architects' Raw & Warm Residence in Taiwan blends art and living spaces.
1Project Philosophy
Raw & Warm Residence was conceived as a residential laboratory for an art collector. The design aims to create harmony between architecture, art, and daily life without compromise. Instead of concealing the original structure, the design preserves the exposed concrete ceiling texture, making the building's raw character the starting point of the spatial narrative. This approach celebrates the authentic materiality of the structure.
2Architectural Details
The 119-square-meter project features remarkable details by Habitat Architects. Led by principal architect Huang Han Chang, the team includes Hsu Tzu and Wang Chun Ting. Alongside raw concrete textures, materials like wood, glass, and steel were carefully selected. These material choices enhance the warm and intimate atmosphere of the space while maintaining an industrial aesthetic.
3Spatial Organization
The project demonstrates a minimalist approach to interior design. Spaces are arranged to accommodate art displays while maintaining functionality. Open-plan living areas are complemented by large windows that allow natural light to flood the interior. This layout creates a balanced environment that serves both practical needs and aesthetic considerations, offering flexibility for art presentation.
4Material Selection
The exposed concrete used in the design reflects the 'raw' character that inspired the project's name. Wooden details add 'warm' touches to the space. This material contrast creates an environment that feels both industrial and comfortable. The strategic use of glass and steel elements contributes to a contemporary aesthetic while maintaining spatial continuity throughout the residence.
5Design Team
Habitat Architects is a Taiwan-based architecture firm specializing in residential projects. For the Raw & Warm Residence, principal architect Huang Han Chang led a team including Hsu Tzu and Wang Chun Ting, who played significant roles in detailing. The firm is known for its thoughtful material selection in residential designs, creating spaces that balance functionality with artistic expression. Their approach emphasizes the intrinsic qualities of each material used.
6Location and Context
Located in Taoyuan, Taiwan, the project harmonizes with the local architectural context while developing its own distinct language. Completed in 2026 and photographed by Studio Millspace, it offers an ideal living space for art enthusiasts seeking retreat from urban life. The design responds to its surroundings while maintaining a strong individual identity, creating a dialogue between the built environment and its natural context.
7Photographic Presentation
Project photographs by Studio Millspace effectively capture the material textures and light play within the spaces. The images clearly convey the minimalist approach and spatial flow of the design. The photographic documentation successfully communicates the architectural value of the project, highlighting how natural light interacts with different materials throughout the day. These visuals serve as an important record of the design's materiality and spatial qualities.
8Design Significance
Raw & Warm Residence stands as a successful example of material simplicity and functional aesthetics in contemporary housing. Specifically designed for art collectors, the space explores the harmonious coexistence of daily life and art appreciation. The project attracts attention with its minimalist approach and material integrity, setting an inspiring reference for future residential designs. It demonstrates how thoughtful material selection and spatial planning can create environments that nurture both practical living and artistic expression.
