The Future of Product Design with Autodesk's Nick Lieven

Exploring the importance of human touch in the age of AI

1An Expert Who's Seen Both Sides

Nick Lieven began his career as a Product Manager in the small domestic appliance industry and now serves as Industry Strategy Manager at Autodesk. This dual perspective allows him to focus on how designers and manufacturers can develop better products. Lieven brings this viewpoint to the Fusion Forward: Design for Home competition as a jury member. Organized by Core77 with Autodesk Fusion, the competition offers a total prize pool of $9,750 across three categories.

2AI Reshaping Design Rules

Lieven says the most exciting development right now is uncertainty: "AI is currently rewriting the rules of product design and innovation. Product development has become a massive playground where everyone tests, learns, and iterates. But there's no clear vision or direction yet, and that excites me." Lieven wants to explore with the industry how this future will take shape.

3The Importance of Human Touch

For Lieven, the real risk isn't AI itself, but what design loses when the human hand disappears from the process. "What worries me most is design losing the human touch," he says. "I strongly believe technology helps us do great things, but ultimately, what makes a product truly great is having a personality crafted by humans."

4Practical Advice for Designers

Lieven offers very practical advice for those preparing Fusion Forward submissions: "Don't design in isolation. Get as much feedback on your design as possible. Two pairs of eyes are always better than one." This serves as a reminder that the strongest entries won't be those refined alone in a studio, but those tested, challenged, and sharpened by others along the way.

5Fusion Forward Competition Details

The Fusion Forward: Design for Home competition is now open for entries. Participants can choose from three categories: Home Appliances, Furniture, and Home Accessories. The total prize pool is $9,750. The submission deadline is September 28. The jury includes industry leaders and design experts. Winners will receive cash prizes and the opportunity to work with Autodesk Fusion software.

6New Approaches in Industry Strategy

In his role at Autodesk, Lieven shapes the strategic direction of the consumer products industry. Recently, he's focused particularly on sustainability and circular economy. "Designers now need to consider not just product functionality but also its lifecycle," he says. This approach is also among the evaluation criteria for the Fusion Forward competition.

7The Power of Collaboration in Design

Lieven emphasizes the critical importance of collaboration in modern design processes. "It's no longer possible for a single designer to manage the entire process alone," he says. Tools like Autodesk Fusion allow teams to collaborate in real-time in a cloud-based environment. Lieven notes that such collaborative tools significantly improve design quality and efficiency.

8The Future Design Ecosystem

Lieven envisions a future where AI and human creativity coexist. "AI will automate routine tasks, allowing designers to focus on areas that truly require creativity," he says. However, he stresses that design education needs to be rethought during this transition. Competitions like Fusion Forward provide important opportunities for young designers preparing for this new ecosystem.
