MAD reveals undulating glass extension design for Rotterdam's Danshuis

Dancer-inspired glass facade to bring life to the dance center set to open in 2030.

1Architecture inspired by dance movements

MAD studio shared updated designs for Danshuis dance center, an addition to the 1923 Provimi warehouse in Rotterdam's port area. The undulating glass facade, inspired by dancers' flowing skirts, will envelop the four-story building's foyer. Scheduled to open in 2030, the center will become Europe's largest dance production facility, located along the Maas River.

2Contemporary twist on Art Deco warehouse

MAD's design proposes adding a curved glass facade to the end of the existing Art Deco warehouse. While preserving the original structure, the modern glass addition will blur indoor-outdoor boundaries. A spiral staircase at the foyer's core will connect all four floors. The project is funded by the Droom en Daad foundation.

3Multifunctional cultural complex

Danshuis will be more than a performance venue—it's a comprehensive cultural hub. The space will house dance studios, a gym, exhibition areas, a cafe, and river-view terraces. It will provide infrastructure suitable for all dance styles at professional and amateur levels. The public hall will serve as a gathering point for locals.

4Dance between architecture and nature

MAD founder Ma Yansong notes the glass facade will create dynamic effects by reflecting moving clouds, shifting light, and surrounding landscapes. The design gives visitors the sensation of moving not just through the building, but through changing skies and nature. This approach aligns with the studio's 'sensory architecture' philosophy.

5Architectural dialogue with migration museum

Danshuis will establish visual and functional connections with MAD's nearby Fenix Migration Museum. A continuous dialogue will emerge between moments created by dance movements and migration stories. Both projects repurpose converted warehouses, blending historical preservation with contemporary functions.

6Rotterdam's cultural transformation

Danshuis is the latest project strengthening the cultural infrastructure of Rotterdam's port area. The district has recently gained attention with significant cultural investments like the Fenix Migration Museum. MAD's design represents successful urban regeneration by preserving industrial heritage while introducing modern uses.

7MAD's global signature

Beyond Rotterdam projects, MAD has created notable works in China, including a spiral science museum in Haikou and bulbous gallery clusters atop a Shenzhen museum. The studio is internationally recognized for its organic forms and contextual approach. Danshuis will reflect this signature style.

8Transforming dance into architecture

The Danshuis project strikingly demonstrates how performing arts can transform physical space. Combining movement's transience with architecture's permanence, the design will enhance Rotterdam's creative identity. Set to open in 2030, the center aims to become a new focal point for Europe's dance scene.
