The new platform provides detailed reports on potential matches.

1A New Tool for Dating Safety

PeopleFinders aims to enhance dating safety with its new platform, Stud or Dud. The platform uses public records, social media posts, and other permitted sources to create detailed reports on potential matches. Users can search with just a name or phone number. Reports provide information in four main categories: financial status, property, employment history, and criminal background.

2Red and Green Flags

The platform helps users identify red and green flags in potential partners. For example, a criminal history like prison time or a DUI is marked as a red flag. However, PeopleFinders CEO Amber Higgins advises users to interpret this information based on personal judgment. AI-generated summaries and an assistant called 'the dating detective' also offer additional advice to users.

3Challenges of Modern Dating

PeopleFinders CEO Higgins notes that modern dating has changed significantly, and tools for building trust haven't kept pace. People now meet through dating apps, social media, and DMs but have very little information about the person on the other side. Higgins recommends using this platform as a 'sidekick' to dating apps.

4Security and Privacy Concerns

Eva Galperin, cybersecurity director at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, warns that such sites could potentially be misused by stalkers. In her tests, Galperin observed that the site failed to flag potentially dangerous partners as claimed. The lack of comprehensive digital privacy laws in the U.S. further exacerbates these concerns.

5Impact of False Information

People-search sites may contain inaccurate or outdated information, which can hinder access to housing, jobs, or public benefits. Even if a Stud or Dud report comes back clean, it can't guarantee someone isn't a genuine threat. Sexual violence remains one of the most underreported crimes in the U.S.

6User Responsibility

Higgins emphasizes that any tool involving personal information must be used responsibly. However, no report can guarantee someone's safety. Users must continue taking normal precautions. Higgins believes women will adopt the platform more readily due to higher personal safety concerns when meeting new people.

7Public Perception

A 2023 Pew Research Center survey found that only 48% of U.S. adults think online dating is safe. Women are more likely than men to consider dating apps dangerous. 60% of Americans believe companies should require background checks before users create dating profiles. Christopher Dietzel of Concordia University notes dating apps already encourage users to Google their matches.

8The Fine Line Between Dating and Surveillance

Dietzel states that vetting potential dates is intertwined with calls for surveillance. Dating apps encourage users to research matches, but this raises privacy concerns. Platforms like PeopleFinders must be carefully designed to balance security and privacy. While helping users make informed decisions, preventing misuse by bad actors is equally critical.
