1Redefining Retail Spaces

Simone Book Services in Copenhagen transcends the traditional bookstore model by functioning as a gallery, listening room, and event venue. Founded by Tugce and Ibo Subay in February 2026, the space serves as a physical manifestation of their literary branding business, which curates specialized libraries for offices and exhibitions.

2Architectural Non-Conformity

Architect Derya Arpac designed the interior to intentionally avoid standard Scandinavian aesthetics. By utilizing cherry wood, which offers a distinct red hue compared to traditional oak or ash, the shelving system mimics structural scaffolding. This design choice creates a unique visual identity that separates the store from typical local retail environments.

3Modular Furniture Systems

The store features highly functional, modular furniture designed by Kasper Kyster and Lærke Ryom. Kyster’s unpolished aluminium shelving allows for future expansion, while Ryom’s leather-wrapped counter incorporates zippers for hidden storage. These elements ensure the space remains adaptable for various retail needs, including book launches and informal community gatherings.

4The Red Room Concept

A dedicated 20-square-metre area known as the red room provides an intimate setting for small-scale exhibitions. Inspired by David Lynch, the space features floor-to-ceiling curtains and bold wall treatments. This specific zone highlights the founders' commitment to creating immersive environments that go beyond simple product display and retail transactions.

5Collaborative Design Elements

Daniel Schofield contributed black-pigmented MDF benches and mobile book trolleys to the store, encouraging visitor interaction with the collection. Artist Staffan Sundström further enhances the atmosphere with rotating paintings. These collaborative efforts ensure that the store’s aesthetic remains dynamic, reflecting a blend of fashion, design, and literary culture.

6Strategic Brand Partnerships

Since its opening, Simone has successfully hosted diverse events for brands like ASICS and fashion label Bonnetje Recut. These partnerships demonstrate the store's utility as a platform for literary branding. By curating specific collections for external clients, the founders have successfully integrated their professional services into a physical retail storefront.

7Future Product Expansion

Beyond books and magazines, the founders plan to launch a line of reading objects. This upcoming collection will include bookmarks, paperweights, lighting, and custom shelving units. This expansion strategy aims to capitalize on the store's reputation as a design-focused hub, further diversifying their revenue streams within the niche retail market.

8Impact of Hybrid Models

Simone exemplifies the shift toward experiential retail where physical space acts as a multi-purpose asset. By combining rare book curation with bespoke furniture and event hosting, the business creates multiple touchpoints for engagement. This model proves that specialized retail can thrive by evolving into a broader cultural destination for consumers.
