1Strategic Infrastructure Milestone

Cork Airport is set to unveil its modernized arrivals concourse and high-tech security area on Wednesday, December 9. This completion marks a significant phase of the DAA Group’s €200 million capital investment program. Managing director Niall MacCarthy confirmed the project was delivered on schedule and within the allocated budget, meeting a challenging construction deadline.

2Advanced Security Technology

The new security screening area features five wider lanes equipped with 17.2-meter C3 EDS scanners, replacing previous 11-meter units. This upgrade transitions screening from standard X-ray technology to hospital-grade Cat scan capabilities. Passengers will no longer need to remove liquids, gels, or electronic items from cabin baggage, significantly streamlining the pre-flight security ritual.

3Architectural and Capacity Upgrades

The new security zone is five to six times larger than the existing facility, designed to eliminate claustrophobic feelings through natural light and open spaces. Construction required approximately 1,500 tonnes of steel and 700 cubic meters of concrete. The mezzanine level also incorporates LED backlit glass that changes color for specific local events.

4Operational Transition Logistics

The night before the new security area opens, staff will execute an overnight transition, relocating body scanners from the old facility to the new mezzanine. This complex operation ensures no service disruption for passengers. The area will also feature a new Insomnia coffee bar, six car rental desks, and improved one-way exit doors.

5Future Retail and Amenities

Following the mezzanine completion, work will shift to expanding the duty-free shop by 30 percent, with completion expected by August. Additionally, an executive lounge is under construction, slated for a St Patrick’s Day 2027 opening. Aramark has been awarded the contract to operate this lounge, drawing inspiration from their high-end Avoca restaurant portfolio.

6Sustainable Energy Initiatives

Cork Airport is developing Ireland’s largest solar-powered carport in partnership with Greenvolt Next. Located over the 'Holiday Blue' car park, the structure will feature a 1.7MW capacity, generating 20 percent of the airport’s total energy needs. Steel components have arrived from Poland, with solar panels scheduled for installation in the coming weeks.

7Transport and Connectivity Plans

Management is addressing public transport challenges by consulting with the Department of Transport to introduce near 24-hour bus services by 2027. These services aim to accommodate early morning flights and late-night charters. The airport is also actively safeguarding land for the Southern Distributor Relief Road and potential future extensions of the Luas light rail.

8Maintaining Competitive Advantage

Cork Airport’s reputation for fast, consistent passenger transitions remains a core strategic focus. By maintaining a user-friendly environment, the airport aims to preserve its status as a preferred transit hub. Future growth plans include adding 1,200 additional parking spaces to supplement the 600 recently added, ensuring capacity meets projected passenger demand through 2027.
