1What is pointer-events?

The CSS pointer-events property determines whether an HTML or SVG element can receive pointer events like clicks and hover states. This gives developers control over how browsers interpret an element's interactivity when the pointer is over it.

2Core Functionality

Before firing a pointer event, browsers perform 'hit-testing' to identify the target element. Normally the topmost element is selected, but if it has pointer-events: none, the browser skips it and checks the next eligible element underneath in the stacking order.

3Key Values and Meanings

The property accepts values like auto (default) and none (disables interaction), plus SVG-specific values including visiblePainted, fill, and stroke. These SVG values provide granular control over which parts of graphic elements can receive pointer events.

4Inheritance and Overriding

pointer-events is an inherited property. When set to none on a parent, children inherit this value unless they explicitly override it with pointer-events: auto. This is particularly useful for modal dialogs where the overlay should be transparent to clicks.

5Impact on Event Propagation

pointer-events only determines the initial event target, not DOM event propagation. For example, a parent with pointer-events: none can still execute event listeners when its interactive child (with pointer-events: auto) is clicked, following normal capture/bubble phases.

6Practical Use Cases

This property is commonly used in transparent overlays, graphic editors, interactive maps, and complex UI components. It's ideal when you need to visually maintain an element while making it non-interactive, or when creating 'click-through' regions.

7Performance and Accessibility

When using pointer-events, consider accessibility and keyboard navigation. Setting it to none may also block keyboard focus. Overuse can negatively impact rendering performance, so it should be applied judiciously after considering alternative solutions.
