Pune Metro Launches India's First All-Women Operated Rail Corridor
Ninety women pilots manage the new Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro line in Pune.
1Historic All-Female Metro Team
Pune has launched India's first metro corridor operated entirely by women on the 23.3-km Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar line. Ninety women, mostly in their 20s, manage all train operations. This initiative marks a major shift in the country's public transport sector, aiming to increase female participation in roles that have been traditionally dominated by men.
2Rigorous Training and Certification
The selected pilots underwent months of intensive classroom instruction and practical training sessions. Candidates were required to pass psychometric tests, technical assessments, and supervised driving hours before receiving clearance. The curriculum covered essential safety procedures, signalling systems, and emergency protocols to ensure they could handle unexpected operational challenges during their daily shifts.
3Diverse Professional Backgrounds
The team consists of women from various parts of Maharashtra, including engineering graduates and individuals from smaller towns. Many joined through campus recruitment drives, while others transitioned from back-office roles. Their diverse educational backgrounds highlight how the program creates new career pathways for young women beyond conventional office-based or engineering-focused professional roles.
4Operational Scope and Scale
The Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar corridor features 23 stations and was built at a cost of approximately ₹8,313 crore. Beyond the 90 train pilots, women are expected to fill nearly half of all station roles, including ticketing staff and station controllers. The line operates under a public-private partnership model to improve connectivity for IT professionals.
5Strategic Partnership for Operations
The French transport company Keolis was awarded a 10-year contract to manage the corridor's operations. They were responsible for the recruitment and training of the female workforce. By implementing international safety standards and operational protocols, Keolis ensures that the all-women team maintains high service levels throughout the daily transit schedules.
6Infrastructure and Sustainability Goals
The project integrates modern infrastructure with environmental sustainability measures. Approximately 30% of the corridor's total electricity requirements are expected to be met through solar power generation. This focus on green energy aligns with broader efforts to modernize India's public transport network while maintaining a commitment to reducing the overall carbon footprint.
7Inauguration and Public Impact
Passenger services officially commenced on November 4, following a virtual inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The line connects the Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar, facilitating easier daily commutes for thousands of residents. This corridor serves as a vital link in Pune's growing public transport network, significantly reducing travel time for local professionals.
8Broader Industry Implications
While cities like Delhi and Bengaluru have female metro pilots, Pune is the first to dedicate an entire corridor to an exclusively female team. This model demonstrates the feasibility of gender-inclusive operations in large-scale infrastructure projects. The success of this initiative could influence future recruitment strategies across the national transport sector.
