Singapore Man Sentenced to Life for Fatal Abuse of Sister
A 34-year-old man received a life sentence for the starvation and torture of his teenage sister.
1Life Sentence for Murder
Huang Bocan, a 34-year-old Singaporean man, was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 5 for the murder of his 19-year-old sister, Huang Baoying. The court found that the victim endured months of systematic starvation and severe physical violence, ultimately leading to her death from malnutrition, sepsis, and blunt force trauma.
2Origins of the Abuse
The siblings initially joined a group centered around a business marketing Herbalife products led by Chee Mei Wan. Following the closure of the group's storefront during the COVID-19 pandemic, the participants began meeting at the siblings' home. The group dynamics eventually devolved into a coercive system of punishment and control.
3Systematic Physical Punishment
The perpetrators implemented a regime where minor infractions resulted in physical abuse. Baoying was forced to perform squats for up to six hours at a time. By February 2021, the trio utilized a WhatsApp group to track her alleged mistakes, while Bocan restricted her food intake and controlled her personal finances.
4Severe Physical Degradation
At the time of her death, Baoying weighed only 27.6 kilograms, a drastic decline from her initial 48.8 kilograms. She was frequently chained inside a toilet, where she was forced to sleep and eat. During one session, she was subjected to as many as 240 blows delivered with a wooden stick.
5Final Hours and Cover-up
On May 4, 2021, Baoying was beaten again for failing to complete assigned squats and left under running water. When she became unresponsive, the trio discussed providing false accounts to authorities and deleted incriminating digital evidence. Bocan eventually called emergency services at 6:02 a.m., but the victim died shortly after paramedics arrived.
6Judicial Condemnation of Cruelty
Justice Aidan Xu described the case as deeply inhumane, noting that the victim had looked to her brother for protection. The judge emphasized that the trio was driven by a desire for power and control. He stated that Bocan treated his sister as if she possessed no human worth during her suffering.
7Status of Other Defendants
The prosecution and defense both sought life imprisonment without caning for Bocan, a request the judge granted. Lim Peng Tiong, another member of the group, was sentenced to 14 years and 11 months in jail this past May. The legal proceedings against the group leader, Chee Mei Wan, are currently still pending.
8Broader Implications of Violence
This case highlights the catastrophic consequences of domestic control and the failure of familial duty. The court's decision serves as a stern reminder that violence has no place in any relationship. The sentencing reflects the gravity of the abuse, ensuring the perpetrator faces long-term consequences for the victim's tragic, preventable death.
