1Escalating Electronic Warfare Tactics

Russia is intensifying its electronic warfare capabilities by deploying Volna Kupol Garant jamming systems along the front lines. These units specifically target Starshield satellite connectivity, which is vital for Ukrainian drone operations. First observed in 2024, the Kremlin confirmed serial production of these systems in August to bolster their defensive countermeasures.

2Strategic Jamming Coverage Areas

Each Volna Kupol Garant unit provides point defense covering approximately 25 square kilometers. Advisor Serhii Beskrestnov reports that Russia has already blanketed critical sites in Crimea with this technology. The deployment is expanding rapidly along the front line to disrupt Ukrainian strike missions that rely heavily on SpaceX satellite data links.

3Targeting Satellite Signal Integrity

Unlike traditional jammers that target ground terminals, this system beams powerful radio interference directly at individual low-Earth-orbit satellites. By creating a local bubble of interference, the system forces satellite links to fail as they pass overhead. This mechanism effectively blinds drones that depend on real-time intel from behind Russian lines.

4Concealment in Civilian Infrastructure

Russian forces are increasingly hiding these jammers within parking lots, using trucks and small trailers to blend into the environment. Beskrestnov warns that among dozens of parked trucks, three to six might house the system. Operators are also utilizing polycarbonate panels, plastic sheeting, or greenhouses to obscure the antennas from aerial observation.

5Evolution of Deployment Patterns

Initial deployments featured six trailers arranged in two neat rows, making them easier for Ukrainian forces to identify and target. However, Russia has since developed versions using only one antenna per trailer. They are now spreading these units out to improve survivability and complicate detection efforts by Ukrainian drone reconnaissance teams.

6Operational Constraints and Limitations

Despite the increased deployment, analysts note that a single jamming system can only target one low-Earth-orbit satellite at any given time. With the Starshield constellation consisting of at least 240 satellites, the jamming remains localized. The systems can operate independently using portable generators, allowing for flexible positioning across various contested territories.

7Impact on Drone Reconnaissance

Starshield integration has been crucial for Ukraine to control mid-range attack drones and receive intelligence during deep-recon missions. By disrupting these specific satellite links, Russia aims to neutralize the tactical advantage provided by onboard artificial intelligence. This ongoing technological struggle highlights the critical importance of satellite-based communication in modern warfare.

8Strategic Implications for Ukraine

Ukrainian drone pilots must now exercise extreme caution when identifying potential targets, as jamming systems are disguised as innocuous civilian vehicles. The shift toward serial production suggests that electronic warfare will remain a central pillar of Russian defense strategy. Ukraine must adapt its reconnaissance tactics to counter these increasingly mobile and hidden threats.
