Main Sequence Expands Leadership and Prepares Fourth Deep Tech Fund
Australian venture firm reaches unicorn milestones while scaling scientific commercialization pipelines.
1Venture Science Foundation
Founded in 2017 out of Australia's national science agency CSIRO, Main Sequence bridges laboratory research and commercial markets. Instead of waiting for incoming startup pitches, the firm identifies massive industrial challenges and proactively assembles scientific talent, intellectual property, and venture capital to build deep tech enterprises.
2Company Creation Architecture
Over eight years, Main Sequence has built a portfolio of over 75 companies across multiple complex domains. Nearly half of these startups were created entirely in-house through dedicated company-building programs rather than sourced externally, proving the viability of proactive venture science over traditional passive deal origination.
3Homegrown Deep Tech Unicorns
Two portfolio companies have recently achieved unicorn status: Advanced Navigation and Gilmour Space Technologies. Advanced Navigation builds AI-powered navigation for clients like Boeing, Tesla, and NASA, while Gilmour Space develops hybrid rocket propulsion, validating the firm's early financial conviction in high-barrier Australian engineering capabilities.
4Scaling Navigation and Robotics
Advanced Navigation spent five initial years self-funded before Main Sequence led its $20 million Series A round alongside US investors Brick Mortar Ventures and In-Q-Tel. This institutional backing enabled rapid commercial scaling across underwater acoustics, commercial robotics, and aerospace sectors requiring sophisticated hardware-software integration.
5Strengthening Healthcare Leadership
Main Sequence promoted Dr. Elaine Stead from Principal to Partner, reinforcing scientific depth across healthcare and biotechnology. Dr. Stead holds a PhD in Biochemistry and brings over a decade of venture experience, guiding investments in CAR-T cell therapies, substance disorder treatments, neurotherapeutics, and non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring.
6Targeted Biotech Pipeline
Under Dr. Stead's direction, Main Sequence manages promising biotech ventures including Currus Biologics, Kinoxis Therapeutics, Macrobiome Therapeutics, Xylo, and Xoma Labs. Managing Partner Bill Bartee emphasized that generating top-tier venture returns in specialized life sciences requires having deep scientific expertise directly at the leadership table.
7Pre-Seed Program Expansion
Alongside its primary funds, Main Sequence operates Atmosphere, a dedicated pre-seed vehicle designed to back Australian researchers before incorporation. CSIRO recently quadrupled its financial commitment to Atmosphere to $20 million, providing crucial early catalytic support to transition university research into viable commercial prototypes.
8Fundraising and Capital Scaling
Main Sequence currently manages over $1 billion across three funds and is actively targeting a first close for its fourth fund this year. This fresh capital deployment signals sustained institutional appetite for capital-intensive deep tech founders across space, healthcare, decarbonisation, and advanced domestic manufacturing.
