Residential Project on Sloped Terrain: 23 Living in Medellín
Plan:b arquitectos' design harmonizes with topography in this notable housing project.
1Project Overview
Designed by Plan:b arquitectos, the 23 Living project is a residential building on a 6,400 m² sloped plot in Medellín's Provenza neighborhood. Completed in 2019, the architecture offers innovative solutions to the challenging terrain conditions of the long, steep site.
2Topography-Integrated Design
To adapt to the irregular urban fabric and sloping terrain, the building incorporates a stepped public pathway along its southern facade. This design facilitates pedestrian access while creating new social spaces for neighborhood residents.
3Architectural Team and Collaboration
The project team, led by Felipe Mesa and Federico Mesa, included Carlos Blanco and Andrés Restrepo. Art direction and interior design were handled by Estudio Liberal, while engineering work was completed by Ménsula Ingeniería.
4Urban Connectivity Enhancement
The project aims to optimize neighborhood mobility through new pedestrian pathways cutting across the block. This solution provides shorter, more accessible routes despite the challenging topography, improving urban quality of life.
5Technical Details and Implementation
Structural design involved collaboration between Ménsula Ingeniería and Banca Valor. Commissioned by Acrecer, the project was successfully completed despite the site's difficult topographic conditions.
6Architectural and Urban Contribution
The 23 Living project demonstrates creative architectural solutions for challenging terrain while enhancing public spaces. This design serves as a model for Medellín's sloped neighborhoods, contributing to sustainable urban development.
