1Project Overview and Location

The Country House project, designed by Arquipélago Arquitetos, is situated in the Caboclo neighborhood of Paraty, Brazil. Positioned 100 meters above sea level, the residence is deeply immersed in the natural incline of the Atlantic forest. This specific site selection creates a direct connection between the built structure and the expansive Serra da Bocaina mountain range.

2Architectural Scale and Scope

Spanning a total area of 190 square meters, the residence was completed in 2024. The project team included architects Bruno Mota and Rafael Ribeiro, with Luís Tavares and Marinho Velloso serving as architects in charge. The scale reflects a focused approach to residential design, prioritizing spatial efficiency within the challenging topography of the forest.

3Structural and Landscape Engineering

Structural integrity was managed by consultant André Fontes to ensure the building safely occupies the steep natural incline. Complementing the structural work, Flora Paraty handled the landscape design, ensuring the vegetation integrates seamlessly with the architecture. Project management was provided by Zelo, coordinating the complex logistics of building within a dense, protected forest environment.

4Materiality and Design Philosophy

The primary material utilized throughout the construction is wood, chosen to harmonize with the surrounding Atlantic forest ecosystem. This material choice emphasizes a sustainable approach to residential architecture, minimizing the visual impact on the landscape. The design focuses on the interaction between the interior living spaces and the external natural environment of the Serra da Bocaina.

5Documentation and Visual Records

Photographic documentation of the completed residence was provided by Pedro Kok, capturing the interplay between the wooden structure and the forest canopy. These images serve as the primary record of the project's final form. The documentation highlights the specific architectural details and the way the house sits within its unique, high-altitude tropical setting.

6Contextualizing Residential Development

Residential projects in the Paraty region often face strict environmental constraints due to the proximity of the Atlantic forest. Arquipélago Arquitetos navigated these requirements by utilizing a 190-square-meter footprint that respects the natural slope. Such developments demonstrate the balance between modern living requirements and the preservation of sensitive, high-biodiversity natural landscapes in Brazil.

7Professional Project Management

The involvement of Zelo in project management underscores the necessity of specialized oversight for remote, topographically complex sites. Coordinating structural engineering, landscape architecture, and construction teams requires precise synchronization to meet the 2024 completion deadline. This collaborative model is standard for high-end residential architecture firms operating within the challenging Brazilian coastal geography.

8Significance of Site Integration

The Country House serves as a case study for integrating residential architecture into steep, forested terrains. By elevating the structure 100 meters above sea level, the architects leveraged the natural topography to enhance the living experience. The project highlights how material selection and expert engineering can successfully facilitate construction in ecologically sensitive, high-inclination environments.
