India’s First Private Fusion Power Startup Advances Reactor Technology
Bengaluru-based Pranos Fusion targets 2027 for its experimental tokamak reactor design blueprint.
1Pranos Fusion Development Milestone
Bengaluru-based startup Pranos Fusion has successfully constructed PRAGYA, a compact doughnut-shaped tokamak reactor. This prototype serves as a critical testing ground for plasma control and superconducting magnet performance. The company aims to leverage these initial findings to develop PRANIK, a significantly larger reactor capable of sustaining extreme fusion temperatures.
2Strategic Timeline for PRANIK
The company plans to finalize the technical blueprint for the PRANIK reactor by 2027. While generating electricity from fusion remains a long-term objective, this design phase represents a major step toward building a functional reactor. CEO Shaurya Kaushal emphasizes that the current focus is on establishing a viable path for energy production.
3Technical Advantages Over Fission
Unlike traditional nuclear fission, which relies on uranium and creates chain reactions, fusion merges light atomic nuclei like deuterium and tritium. This process eliminates the risk of runaway reactions common in fission plants. Furthermore, India possesses abundant deuterium supplies, providing a stable fuel source for future fusion-based energy generation initiatives.
4Institutional Support and Incubation
Pranos Fusion operates under the incubation of the Institute of Plasma Research and the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research. This affiliation with key government bodies provides the startup with essential scientific infrastructure. The company was recently showcased at the Emerging Science Technology and Innovation Conclave held in Bengaluru last week.
5Global Context and Challenges
The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor in France remains the largest ongoing project, involving multiple nations. However, it faces significant delays, with full operations pushed to 2039 and costs rising by €5 billion. Pranos Fusion aims to differentiate itself by focusing on compact machines and high-temperature superconducting magnets to reduce overall costs.
6Funding and Market Position
The startup has secured $7.2 million in funding from investors including Ankur Capital, pi Ventures, and Industrial47. Globally, private fusion companies have collectively raised over $13 billion to advance net-gain programs. Pranos Fusion intends to utilize India's manufacturing base to achieve cost efficiencies that larger, international projects currently struggle to maintain.
7Software and Hardware Platforms
Pranos Fusion has diversified its business model through two distinct platforms. JENGA provides simulation, design, and control software acting as a digital twin for reactor operations. Simultaneously, the MAGGA program focuses on developing high-temperature superconducting magnets, which are essential for maintaining plasma stability within the compact, high-field tokamak reactor environments.
8Future Energy Industry Impact
As global energy demand continues to rise, fusion offers a clean, high-density alternative to fossil fuels. By utilizing high-temperature superconducting magnets that operate without resistance, Pranos Fusion aims to make smaller, more powerful reactors feasible. This shift could eventually transform the energy landscape by providing a sustainable, non-radioactive power generation source.
