Hollywood's iconic Cinerama Dome to reopen under Sony and Alamo Drafthouse deal
The legendary cinema shuttered during pandemic will reopen its doors in 2028.
1Historic revival
Hollywood's iconic Cinerama Dome cinema, closed during the pandemic, will reopen in 2028 through a partnership between Sony Pictures and Alamo Drafthouse. Built in 1963, this unique structure is considered an important part of cinema history.
2Architectural preservation priority
The restoration project will preserve the cinema's 86-foot-wide curved dome and iconic exterior. The geodesic-designed venue will continue to offer a special experience for moviegoers with its 70mm film projection capability.
3New West Coast flagship
Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kustermann announced Cinerama Dome will become the company's West Coast flagship location. Unlike other Alamo theaters, it won't feature in-theater dining, a decision aimed at preserving the venue's historic character.
4Technological legacy
Cinerama Dome was one of only three cinemas worldwide capable of operating with a three-projector system. The 70mm projection technology, popularized by Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey,' will return to audiences through this restoration.
5Complex expansion
The project will also see the reopening of the adjacent 14-screen ArcLight Cinemas complex by Alamo Drafthouse. These theaters will offer in-seat dining, though the chain's shift to phone-based ordering has recently faced criticism.
6Boost for cinema culture
Cinema United CEO Michael O'Leary emphasized the importance of this move for the film industry. With post-pandemic cinema attendance rebounding, Cinerama Dome's reopening is seen as a crucial step in preserving cinematic culture.
