Built in 1963, this unique structure is considered an important part of cinema history. ## Architectural preservation priority The restoration project will preserve the cinema's 86-foot-wide curved dome and iconic exterior. The geodesic-designed venue will continue to offer a special experience for moviegoers with its 70mm film projection capability. ## New West Coast flagship Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kustermann announced Cinerama Dome will become the company's West Coast flagship location. Unlike other Alamo theaters, it won't feature in-theater dining, a decision aimed at preserving the venue's historic character. ## Technological legacy Cinerama Dome was one of only three cinemas worldwide capable of operating with a three-projector system. The 70mm projection technology, popularized by Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey,' will return to audiences through this restoration. ## Complex expansion The project will also see the reopening of the adjacent 14-screen ArcLight Cinemas complex by Alamo Drafthouse. These theaters will offer in-seat dining, though the chain's shift to phone-based ordering has recently faced criticism. ## Boost for cinema culture Cinema United CEO Michael O'Leary emphasized the importance of this move for the film industry. With post-pandemic cinema attendance rebounding, Cinerama Dome's reopening is seen as a crucial step in preserving cinematic culture. ## Sources covering this story - https://fortune.com/2026/07/22/cinerama-dome-hollywood-covid-closure-revival/ — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
