Mysten Labs Tech Chief Joins Anthropic to Work on AI Security
Sam Blackshear joins Anthropic as AI shifts the balance between attackers and defenders.
1Sam Blackshear's New Role
Sam Blackshear, co-founder and CTO of Mysten Labs, is joining Anthropic to work on AI security. Blackshear emphasized that this move comes at a time when AI is altering the balance between attackers and defenders. Evan Cheng, CEO of Mysten Labs, will continue to shape the company's technical vision.
2Founding of Mysten Labs
Blackshear co-founded Mysten Labs in 2021 alongside four former Meta executives. The company is known as the creator of the Sui blockchain. Blackshear stated that he found great joy in hands-on technical work and exploring new problem domains at Mysten Labs.
3AI's Role in Security
AI is increasingly being used to identify software vulnerabilities, automate phishing campaigns, and accelerate attacks on blockchain infrastructure. Blackshear highlighted that this has fundamentally shifted the balance between defense and offense.
4Impact of AI Coding Tools
In April, Blackshear hosted a panel with security experts to discuss how AI coding tools are reshaping smart contract security. These tools offer significantly faster and more effective results compared to traditional methods.
5Technological Transition
Blackshear experienced a turning point when he ported a static analysis tool he developed at Facebook using OCaml-Java to Move, Sui's programming language. He used Claude AI to identify potential vulnerabilities and was impressed by the results.
6Access to AI Models
Major players in the crypto sector are seeking access to powerful AI models to protect their code from attacks. However, models from companies like Anthropic are restricted to a small group of firms.
7Democratization of AI Models
Michael Coates, chief information security officer at Solana Foundation, noted that restricting access to advanced AI models initially makes sense but loses validity once competing models reach the same cybersecurity level. Coates stressed the need for defenders to access the best models.
8Future Security Strategies
As AI's role in security continues to grow, access to the most advanced technologies is critical for defenders to gain an edge over attackers. Blackshear's move to Anthropic is seen as a significant step in this direction.
