1Quick Share Comes to Kindles

According to Android Authority, a new project brings Quick Share functionality to jailbroken Kindle devices. The open-source project called Kindshare allows wireless file transfer from Android phones to Kindles. However, it currently works only one way - files cannot be sent from Kindle to phones. The project was discovered by Hackaday and created by developer unrealJune.

2How It Works

Kindshare adds Quick Share receiver functionality to compatible Kindle devices. Once installed, the Kindle appears as a target device in Quick Share. Interestingly, the Kindle can create its own Wi-Fi access point when no network is available. This allows phones to connect directly to the Kindle for file transfer. However, this feature requires the Kindle to be awake as Wi-Fi turns off during sleep mode.

3Technical Details and Limitations

The system requires a fairly technical setup. First, you need a jailbreakable Kindle model and firmware version. Installing tools like KOReader and Kindshare involves computer-based technical processes. The developer has only fully verified the setup on Kindle Voyage (firmware 5.13.6). Compatibility with other models isn't guaranteed. Also, incoming transfers are automatically accepted, which is a security consideration.

4Installation Process

Those who want to use Kindshare can find all steps on the GitHub page. The process includes having a jailbroken Kindle, installing KOReader, and setting up Kindshare. The developer recommends users have technical knowledge as some command line operations are required. Once installed, files can be sent from Android phones via Quick Share interface. However, this feature is currently limited to specific models.

5Security Warnings

The Kindshare project automatically accepts incoming files. This could pose potential security risks. Users are advised to only accept files from trusted sources. Also, jailbreaking may void Kindle's warranty, so users should consider these risks. Being open-source, developers may address security vulnerabilities over time.

6Supported Models

Currently, only Kindle Voyage (firmware 5.13.6) has been fully tested. However, other jailbreakable models may work too. Users need to check their device compatibility. Older Kindle models are generally more jailbreak-friendly, so newer devices might have limitations. The developer plans to add support for more models in the future.

7Why This Project Matters

Kindshare offers new functionality to Kindle users. Wireless file transfer can be a significant convenience, especially for tech-savvy users. Amazon not officially offering such a feature makes community-based solutions more valuable. This project exemplifies how to expand e-readers' potential. Its open-source nature also allows developer contributions.

8Future Updates

Developer unrealJune plans to add two-way file transfer to the project. Compatibility work continues for more Kindle models. Improving security measures and user interface are also on the roadmap. New features may be added based on community feedback. Such projects play important roles in unlocking devices' unofficial capabilities.
