Android 17 Update Rolls Out to Google Pixel Phones
New features and security updates released for Pixel 6 and later models worldwide.
1Android 17 Official Release
Google has officially released the stable version of Android 17 on June 16 after months in beta testing. As usual, Pixel series phones are the first to receive the update. Pixel 6 and later models can now install the update through their Settings app.
2Supported Devices
The Android 17 update covers all Pixel phones from Pixel 6 onwards. Pixel 5 and older models won't receive this update. Supported devices include the Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 8 series, and upcoming Pixel 9 and 10 series.
3New Features
One of the most notable features in Android 17 is Bubbles, allowing apps to run in small floating windows. Another addition is the ability to use the front camera during screen recording, perfect for creating tutorials or gameplay videos with commentary.
4Gaming Mode for Foldables
Android 17 introduces a special gaming mode for foldable Pixel devices. The screen splits 50/50 with the game on top and touch controls below. This feature will be available on Pixel Fold and upcoming foldable models, enhancing the gaming experience.
5Security Enhancements
The new OS brings improved security features including temporary location access, selective contact sharing, and enhanced Live Threat Detection that identifies more malicious apps. Google has also limited PIN attempts and increased wait times after failures.
6Future Plans for Other Android Devices
Google clarified these features aren't exclusive to Pixels - other Android 17 compatible devices from manufacturers like Samsung will receive them soon. The full rollout may take about a week, depending on carriers and regions.
