1Unexpected Bitcoin Rally

Bitcoin experienced an unexpected rally after months of selling pressure. On Wednesday, the cryptocurrency surged nearly 6% to over $69,000, reaching a level not seen since June. This rise came immediately after the Treasury Department announced it would double purchases of older long-term government bonds.

2Dollar Weakness and Bitcoin

Matt Mena, senior strategist at 21Shares, stated that the market interpreted this announcement as a quiet form of quantitative easing. This move weakens the dollar while boosting scarce, debasement-hedge assets like Bitcoin. Investors rushed into these assets, forcing short sellers to cover approximately $1.5 billion in positions by buying Bitcoin in the market.

3Historic Short Squeeze

21Shares noted that around $700 million in Bitcoin was purchased in a single minute, which may have amounted to the largest short squeeze in Bitcoin's history. This rally follows months of weak price action as Bitcoin struggled to recover from a brutal crash last October.

4Bitcoin's Past Performance

According to CoinGecko, Bitcoin lost about 40% of its value since trading at $115,000 during the crash last October. This crash triggered over $19 billion in liquidations. Alongside the Treasury announcement, investors have increasingly priced in a pause in rate hikes over the past two months.

5ETFs and Increased Demand

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs drew roughly $1 billion in inflows during the first two weeks of August, adding another source of demand for the cryptocurrency. Following the Treasury Department's announcement, not only Bitcoin but also major tokens like Ethereum and Zcash saw significant gains.

6Bitcoin's Bottom

Zach Pandl, head of research at Grayscale, suggested that this rally may indicate Bitcoin's bear market has moved past its worst phase. Pandl stated that Bitcoin potentially bottomed at $58,000 earlier this summer and that it's a compelling time for long-term investors to allocate to Bitcoin and the crypto asset class.

7Fiscal Pressures and Alternative Assets

Pandl noted that the Treasury's move highlighted deeper fiscal pressures and could prompt investors to consider alternative stores of value. The national debt is expected to reach $40 trillion by the end of the month, while the U.S. conflict with Iran has driven inflation higher across the country.

8Regulations and Bitcoin

Pandl added that recent favorable developments for the crypto industry may have influenced Bitcoin's price performance. On Tuesday, the Securities and Exchange Commission proposed a regulatory framework for crypto assets. This proposal would exempt eligible crypto firms from certain federal securities rules and make it easier for them to issue tokens and raise capital.
