Pic2svg: Convert Raster Images to Editable Vectors in Browser
Browser-based tool traces photos/logos into clean SVG paths without cloud uploads
1Local vectorization engine
Pic2svg processes images entirely in the browser without cloud uploads, ensuring privacy and immediate results. It supports JPG, PNG, WEBP, TIFF, BMP, GIF, and ICO formats. The tool automatically normalizes CMYK/palette images to RGB and flattens transparency to white before tracing, maintaining workflow efficiency.
2Adaptive tracing presets
Users can choose from five tracing presets ranging from 'Sharp' (max detail) to 'Small files'. Each preset applies different resampling rules - images wider than 3840px (Sharp) or 3072px (Balanced/Compact) are downscaled using LANCZOS without upscaling. The engine preserves original canvas dimensions while optimizing output quality.
3Smart path generation
The tool analyzes image content through color quantization on 256px thumbnails. Images with ≤48 distinct colors are traced as straight-edged polygons (ideal for logos), while photographic content (>48 colors) generates smooth splines. This adaptive approach ensures optimal path generation for different image types.
4True vector output
Unlike solutions that wrap bitmaps in SVG containers, Pic2svg produces genuine editable vector paths compatible with Illustrator, Figma, Inkscape, and CAD software. The vtracer engine builds stacked color layers into filled paths with absolute coordinates, adding viewBox and pretty-printed path data for readability.
5Multi-format export
While always generating SVG output, the tool optionally creates PDF (print), EPS/AI (Illustrator), and DXF (AutoCAD) formats on demand. Export formats are generated from the SVG only when selected, preventing unnecessary processing during batch operations. This efficiency allows tracing 1-12 files in the same five steps.
6Technical implementation
The raster engine uses Pillow for initial image processing, converting to RGB space. Path generation occurs through vtracer, which folds transform operations into absolute coordinates. Output files maintain clean path structures without redundant transformations, ensuring compatibility across vector editing platforms.
7Workflow advantages
By eliminating cloud dependencies, Pic2svg offers instant vectorization with drag-and-drop or paste (⌘+V) functionality. Designers retain full control over assets without privacy concerns. The local processing approach also enables offline use and handles batches without performance degradation from unused format generation.
8Design system integration
The tool's output facilitates seamless integration with design systems by producing clean, editable vectors rather than static assets. This enables consistent scaling across applications from web (SVG) to print (PDF) to manufacturing (DXF), while maintaining the ability to tweak individual paths in any vector editor.
