1Strategic Fund Expansion Plans

Cornerstone Ventures is preparing to launch its third fund in the second half of 2027, targeting a capital raise of up to $250 million. This move represents a significant scale-up from their second fund, which currently holds $150 million, as the firm seeks to write larger cheques for high-potential portfolio companies.

2Exercising Greenshoe Option

Managing partner Abhishek Prasad confirmed the firm is currently exercising the greenshoe option on its second fund. This tactical decision aims to settle the fund size between $170 million and $200 million. The firm intends to wait for current portfolio results before finalizing the transition toward the upcoming third fund vehicle.

3Deeptech and AI Focus

The firm plans to maintain a 10% to 20% allocation toward deeptech, focusing specifically on space technology and advanced manufacturing. Additionally, Cornerstone is exploring verticalized AI solutions, particularly within the services sector. This shift aligns with broader industry trends where venture firms are increasingly targeting the $283 billion Indian IT services market.

4Portfolio Management Strategy

Cornerstone intends to limit its third fund portfolio to a maximum of 20 startups to ensure deep operational involvement. By avoiding excessive capital deployment, the firm aims to maximize returns for limited partners. This disciplined approach follows their experience in Fund II, which balanced early-stage bets with growth-stage investments for liquidity.

5Fund I Exit Performance

The maiden $50 million fund is currently in its exit phase, having already completed three divestments including CreditNirvana and Wigzo. With two additional exits in final stages, the firm expects its distributions to paid-in capital ratio to reach 80%. These exits have achieved average multiples ranging between 2.7x and 3.3x.

6Evolution of Investment Thesis

While the first fund focused exclusively on early-stage opportunities, Fund II introduced growth-stage investments to accelerate liquidity. Notable investments like Yotta and OfBusiness reflect this strategy, with both companies expected to hit public markets soon. This hybrid model allows the firm to capture value across different stages of company maturity.

7Competitive Landscape in India

Cornerstone operates within a competitive ecosystem alongside major players like Peak XV Partners, Accel, and Elevation Capital. These firms are actively scouting for AI-driven disruptions in the services industry. Cornerstone’s specific focus on verticalized AI solutions differentiates its approach from generalist funds currently operating within the Indian venture capital market.

8Future Market Outlook

Looking ahead, the firm anticipates at least three more companies from its first fund will pursue public listings within three years. The remaining portfolio assets are likely to undergo private equity roll-ups or strategic acquisitions. This structured exit path remains central to Cornerstone’s goal of delivering realized profits to its investors.
