Varanasi Launches India's First Urban Public Transport Ropeway System
New aerial corridor slashes travel time to Kashi Vishwanath Temple to fifteen minutes.
1Pioneering Urban Aerial Transit
Varanasi is nearing the completion of India's first urban public transport ropeway system. The project aims to modernize city mobility by providing an aerial alternative to congested ground roads. Construction is currently in the final stages, with trial runs already underway along the critical Rathyatra-Godowlia stretch to ensure operational readiness.
2Significant Travel Time Reduction
The 3.85-kilometer corridor connects Varanasi Junction, also known as Cantt railway station, directly to Godowlia. This infrastructure development will reduce travel time from the current 45 minutes to approximately 15 to 16 minutes. This efficiency gain is expected to significantly benefit both local residents and the high volume of pilgrims.
3Strategic Route and Connectivity
The ropeway features four stations, passing through Kashi Vidyapeeth and Rathyatra before terminating at Godowlia. The final stop is located just 700 meters from the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. This strategic placement ensures that tourists and devotees have seamless access to the shrine while bypassing the city's most densely populated traffic zones.
4Operational Timeline and Launch
Approximately 95% of the construction work is now complete. While officials are targeting the Dev Deepawali festival on November 24 for operations, the formal inauguration date remains pending. Divisional commissioner S Rajalingam confirmed that the administration will finalize the official opening schedule within the next fortnight, likely by mid-November.
5Tiered Fare and Discount Structure
The Uttar Pradesh government has established a fare structure ranging from ₹20 to ₹50 based on distance. A full journey from Cantt to Godowlia costs ₹50, while shorter segments start at ₹20. To support frequent commuters, the administration offers a 20% discount to holders of the Kashi Smart Pass.
6Premium and Group Services
Beyond standard transit, the project includes a premium gondola facility for tourists and group tours. A private gondola is priced at ₹2,000, though organizations booking in advance can secure the service for ₹1,200. This tiered pricing model aims to balance public accessibility with revenue generation from the city's tourism sector.
7Passenger Amenities and Logistics
The Cantt station includes a dedicated cloakroom to enhance the passenger experience. Travelers can store luggage free of charge for the first two hours. For longer durations, a fee of ₹50 per hour applies to items weighing up to 15 kilograms, catering specifically to the needs of pilgrims carrying travel bags.
8Broader Urban Impact Goals
This ropeway serves as a model for addressing urban congestion in historic Indian cities where road expansion is limited. By shifting transit to an aerial corridor, the city expects to curb pollution levels and improve overall traffic flow. Its success could influence future infrastructure planning in other high-density metropolitan areas across India.
