Aroeira House by FGMF: Architectural Harmony in São Paulo Countryside
Skillfully positioned on a sloping terrain, this residence blends with the natural landscape.
1Project Location and Site Analysis
Aroeira House is located on a corner plot within a gated community in the São Paulo countryside. Designed specifically for the sloping terrain, the house is positioned on the upper portion to offer the best views. Its corner location allows level pedestrian access from the side street while vehicles access the garage from the lower street. The architects developed a design perfectly adapted to the 1,025 m² site, demonstrating innovative solutions for challenging topography.
2Architectural Team and Design Process
The project was led by FGMF's team under Fernando Forte, Lourenço Gimenes, and Rodrigo Marcondes Ferraz. A 15-member project team developed solutions for the site's challenging conditions. Coordinators including Desyree Niedo and Gabriel Mota played critical roles in implementation. Photographs by Fran Parente documented the project's details, showcasing the architectural excellence achieved in this residential design.
3Structural Solutions and Engineering
Structural consulting by Benedicts Engineering developed specialized solutions for the sloping terrain. Lighting design by Foco LD highlights the house's nighttime appearance. Yellowbrick Houses handled general construction, establishing a stable foundation system despite the 30% slope. These solutions enabled safe construction despite the difficult terrain conditions, demonstrating innovative engineering approaches in residential architecture.
4Spatial Organization and Functionality
Main living areas were positioned to maximize views, with large glass surfaces strengthening indoor-outdoor connections. Garage access from the lower street provides daily convenience. The 4-bedroom house clusters common areas on the upper level, combining privacy with panoramic advantages. This thoughtful spatial arrangement creates a harmonious living experience that responds to both human needs and site characteristics.
5Material Selection and Sustainability
The project prioritized local materials chosen for durability in regional climate conditions. Combinations of wood and natural stone complement the modern design language. Passive cooling systems enhance energy efficiency, while a rainwater collection system implements sustainable water management. These choices reflect a commitment to environmental responsibility without compromising architectural quality or aesthetic value.
6Lighting Design and Atmosphere
The lighting system by Foco LD shapes the house's nighttime identity, using LED technology to minimize energy consumption. Exterior lighting highlights the site's topography, while adjustable interior systems create varied atmospheres. This layered approach to illumination enhances both functionality and mood, demonstrating how lighting can transform architectural spaces throughout day and night cycles.
7Community Integration and Environmental Relationship
Located within a gated community, Aroeira House offers both privacy and a controlled social environment. The design maintains architectural harmony with neighboring structures while integrating with natural surroundings through landscape design. Easy access to community amenities enhances quality of life, showing how individual residences can benefit from thoughtful community planning and shared spaces.
8A Signature in Modern Brazilian Architecture
Aroeira House stands as a successful example of FGMF's site-sensitive design approach, offering new perspectives for hillside residential architecture. Recognized as one of 2024's most notable architectural works, this design sets a reference point in Brazil's modern housing landscape. It successfully combines functionality with aesthetic appeal, demonstrating how contemporary architecture can respond to both human needs and environmental contexts.
