Pink Floyd to Release 50th Anniversary 'Animals' Deluxe Boxed Set
Sony Music announces a comprehensive nine-disc collection featuring unreleased studio and live recordings.
1Comprehensive Anniversary Collection
Sony Music will release the 'Animals 50' deluxe boxed set on January 22, 2027, marking the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s 1977 concept album. The collection includes nine discs featuring various formats, such as five CDs, three LPs, and a Blu-Ray disc containing high-resolution 5.1 and Atmos audio mixes for fans.
2Rare Studio Material
The rarities disc features a previously unreleased track penned by Roger Waters titled 'Young Nicholas Jon.' Additionally, the set includes early versions and rough mixes of 'Dogs' and 'Sheep,' alongside an original radio edit of 'Sheep.' These tracks provide listeners with a deeper look into the band's creative process during that era.
3Live Oakland Performance
A highlight of the set is 'Live From the Oakland Coliseum,' a 13-track recording from May 9, 1977. Captured by a 19-year-old bootlegger named Reinhard Hohlwein, the show features full performances of 'Animals' and 'Wish You Were Here,' plus the final live rendition of the instrumental track 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene.'
4Technical Audio Upgrades
The deluxe set includes both the original 1977 mix and a 2018 remix of the album. Although the 2018 version was previously released in 2022 following internal band disagreements, its inclusion here offers a definitive listening experience. The Blu-Ray component further enhances the package with advanced surround sound and Atmos mixing options.
5Exclusive Physical Content
Beyond audio, the deluxe box contains a 64-page hardback book featuring liner notes by author Jonathan Lethem. It also includes previously unpublished images from the iconic album cover photo shoot at London's Battersea Power Station. These physical additions are exclusive to the deluxe edition, distinguishing it from the slimmed-down two-disc or two-LP versions.
6Strategic Catalog Management
This release follows Sony Music's 2024 acquisition of Pink Floyd’s music rights for an estimated $400 million. The label has been actively revisiting the band’s archives to produce high-quality reissues. While the band members are not currently involved in these upgrades, they provided statements reflecting on the aggressive, stripped-back nature of the album.
7Context of 1977 Production
David Gilmour noted that the 1977 recording environment was heavily influenced by the rising punk movement. He described the album as more aggressive and 'rough and ready' compared to the soundscapes of 'Wish You Were Here.' This historical perspective highlights the band's shift toward a more direct, confrontational style during that specific period.
8Market Availability Details
Fans can purchase the Blu-Ray, two-CD, and two-LP editions separately if they prefer not to buy the full nine-disc box. However, certain rarities remain exclusive to this collection. The release serves as a significant archival project, officially upgrading historical bootleg recordings to professional standards for a wider commercial audience to enjoy.
