Hazel (YC W24) Hiring Full Stack Engineer for Government AI
Join a mission-driven startup transforming U.S. government procurement through cutting-edge AI solutions.
1Mission-Driven Procurement Innovation
Hazel is tackling the $2.7 trillion annual U.S. government procurement market by deploying advanced AI to increase efficiency. Founded by alumni from Palantir and BCG, the startup aims to replace glacial, stovepiped processes with rapid, automated bid evaluations. The goal is to empower agencies to purchase goods and services at the speed of need.
2Mandatory Security Clearance Requirements
This role is exclusively for U.S. citizens capable of obtaining and maintaining a Top Secret security clearance with a full-scope polygraph. There are no exceptions to this requirement. Hazel will sponsor the clearance process for the successful candidate, as the position involves direct work on sensitive national security contracts and government infrastructure.
3Full-Stack Engineering Responsibilities
As a full-stack engineer, you will architect and build Hazel’s platform from the ground up. Responsibilities span the entire procurement lifecycle, including backend services, data pipelines, model integration, and front-end delivery. You will own features end-to-end, ensuring that the AI solutions are secure, scalable, and effectively integrated into unique government operational environments.
4Strategic Customer Deployment Focus
This position focuses on deploying Hazel’s AI for a major new customer contract, marking a significant milestone for the firm. You will lead the customization and security accreditation of the platform, working side-by-side with government partners. This is a rare opportunity to be among the first startups to win work with this specific agency.
5Compensation and Equity Package
Hazel offers a competitive salary range between $150,000 and $200,000 USD per year. In addition to the base salary, the role includes company equity ranging from 0.25% to 0.5%. This compensation structure reflects the high-impact nature of the work and the early-stage, high-growth environment of this YC W24 startup company.
6Startup Speed Meets Public Service
Engineers at Hazel operate in a fast-paced environment that balances startup agility with the mission-critical focus of public service. You will work closely with founders and a dynamic engineering team to prioritize impactful features. The culture emphasizes ownership, continuous learning, and the ability to wear multiple hats while solving complex technical problems.
7Addressing Existential National Challenges
Hazel’s technology supports diverse agencies, ranging from public school classrooms to warfighters in the field. By automating procurement, the company helps address pressing issues like climate sustainability and great power competition. The founders prioritize practical, workhorse-style problem solving over theoretical strategy, aiming to deliver tangible innovation to the public interest immediately.
8Historical Context and Vision
Named after Hazel Ying Lee, a pioneer in the Women Airforce Service Pilots, the company embodies a commitment to breaking barriers. By leveraging generative AI in the public sector, Hazel seeks to unlock national potential. The team is backed by investors from both tech and government sectors to ensure long-term mission success.
