Formant Studio Reimagines Classic Chicago Taverns for Mexico City Restaurant
Nota Tavern blends restored residential heritage with modernist Chicago architectural influences.
1Historic Heritage Adaptive Reuse
Formant Studio transformed part of a former hacienda-style residence in Mexico City’s Escandón I neighbourhood into Nota Tavern. The two-storey venue occupies a preserved section of the original house, creating an Italian-American dining concept that bridges architectural conservation with functional hospitality spatial programming.
2Chicago Tavern Typology Translation
The interior concept reinterprets the unpretentious character of classic Chicago neighbourhood taverns into contemporary architectural form. Co-founder Alejandro Valencia emphasised prioritising familiarity over spectacle, drawing direct inspiration from Chicago's iconic architects, merging the austere minimalism of Mies van der Rohe with Frank Lloyd Wright’s warmer modernism.
3Bespoke Millwork and Furniture
Following mid-century modern design traditions, Formant Studio designed custom furniture pieces specifically for the project. These elements feature black-stained oak dining tables, custom steel bar stools, bespoke metal sconces, and extensive Mexican rosewood panelling, paired directly with high-performance upholstery executed in black Kvadrat architectural textiles.
4Preserving Structural Stone Pillars
Original ornate stone pillars that previously framed the exterior entrance portico were stripped of paint and fully restored. Positioned as structural focal points within the main dining room, they establish a striking visual anchor that contrasts raw heritage masonry with smooth, modern timber panelling.
5Spatial Rhythm Along Walls
The building footprint heavily dictated the interior flow, placing continuous built-in booths along the longest walls to structure spatial rhythm. This strategic layout maintains an open, flexible central circulation zone, allowing the dining room to accommodate diverse party sizes and varying service configurations efficiently throughout operation.
6Dual-Level Dining Flow Configuration
An entry vestibule directs guests toward the main floor or a brown spiral staircase leading to an upper private dining room. This mezzanine level cantilevers over ground-floor banquettes with a high parapet for visual privacy, while the operational kitchen remains concealed directly underneath the upper floor.
7Acoustic Engineering and Material Finishes
The double-height room features white-painted ceiling rafters set above polished grey terrazzo floors and white-clothed tables. At the rear, the bar combines rosewood millwork with mirrored backsplashes that diffuse street light, complemented by a dedicated high-fidelity sound system engineered specifically by Paxwave.
8Curated Contextual Interior Identity
Art pieces and historic antiques were selected by Galería Córdoba to enrich the textural narrative across the interior. By blending residential heritage with bespoke industrial fabrication, Formant Studio demonstrates how regional adaptive reuse projects can maintain distinct cultural identity alongside imported design influences.
