This appointment marks his first time leading the senior state team. Suraj Kashyap will serve as the vice-captain for the squad, which consists of seventeen players. ## Tournament Schedule Details The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is scheduled to commence on November 14, 2026. Bihar is placed in Group B alongside teams including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu. Their opening campaign begins against Saurashtra in Indore. Sooryavanshi is expected to lead the team before departing for international commitments with India A. ## Strategic Leadership Rationale BCA president Harsh Vardhan stated that this captaincy opportunity is designed to foster Sooryavanshi’s growth as a leader. The association highlighted his demonstrated talent, confidence, and maturity at a young age. Officials expressed hope that his leadership would inspire the team to deliver a disciplined and highly competitive performance throughout the tournament. ## Upcoming International Commitments Sooryavanshi will only participate in the first two matches for Bihar before joining the India A squad. He is slated to compete in the ACC Men's Asia Cup Rising Stars 2026, held in Doha from November 19 to 29. India A begins their tournament campaign against Nepal on November 20, 2026. ## Previous Leadership Experience The young batter previously served as vice-captain for the East Zone side that secured victory in the Duleep Trophy under Ishan Kishan. This earlier appointment faced some criticism due to his limited experience, having played only eight first-class matches at that time. He now seeks to prove his leadership capabilities in T20. ## Proven T20 Performance Sooryavanshi brings significant experience to the role, having played 44 T20 matches, including 23 appearances for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. He notably won the Orange Cap in the 2026 IPL season, scoring 776 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate exceeding 237, showcasing his explosive batting prowess at the crease. ## International Impact Highlights His recent form includes a match-winning 175 off 80 balls in the Under-19 World Cup final against England. Furthermore, he recently scored 45 off 19 balls during the third T20 International against New Zealand. This performance included a 133-run opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma, solidifying his reputation as a top-tier talent. ## Squad Fitness Considerations The Bihar squad selection includes players Mangal Mahour and Shakib Hussain, though their participation remains subject to fitness assessments following the first two matches. The team faces a challenging group stage, requiring consistent performances from the entire roster to progress further in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournament this November season. ## Sources covering this story - https://www.thehindu.com/sport/vaibhav-sooryavanshi-named-bihar-captain-for-syed-mushtaq-ali-trophy/article71675483.ece — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
