IEEE 2025 Social Impact Report Showcases Engineering for Public Good
Global initiatives leverage technical expertise to address humanitarian challenges and advance societal welfare.
1Strategic Social Impact Reporting
The IEEE 2025 Social Impact Report highlights how over 500,000 members utilize technical expertise for humanitarian goals. By focusing on public awareness and ethical technology deployment, the organization aims to align engineering advancements with societal needs. This report documents specific volunteer-led programs that translate complex technical standards into tangible community benefits.
2Digital Safety and Regulation
IEEE collaborated with Indonesian policymakers to implement regional regulations protecting children online. These frameworks utilize the IEEE 2089-2021 and 2089.1-2024 standards to guide age-appropriate digital service design. By providing practical steps for age verification and platform safety, the organization establishes a technical foundation for protecting minors within increasingly complex digital ecosystems.
3Emergency Response and Outreach
The Mobile Outreach Vehicle (MOVE) program provides critical communication support during natural disasters. In 2024, these units assisted survivors of Hurricanes Helene and Milton in the United States. Beyond emergency deployment, the program maintains year-round engagement by participating in 25 STEM educational events, demonstrating the versatility of mobile technology infrastructure.
4Empowering Undergraduate Innovation
The EPICS in IEEE program awarded US $290,000 to 48 service projects last year. One notable initiative in Skopje, Macedonia, involved students creating IoT-driven sensing devices to monitor local air quality. This program bridges the gap between academic theory and real-world problem solving while providing students with essential hands-on engineering experience.
5Educational Outreach and Mentorship
The TryEngineering initiative awarded US $70,379 in grants to 58 global programs to inspire future engineers. The TryEngineering Summer Institute hosted over 310 students aged 13 to 17, focusing on aerospace and artificial intelligence. These efforts aim to cultivate a pipeline of talent by engaging pre-university students in specialized technical fields.
6Professional Excellence and Service
IEEE-HKN, the organization's honor society, currently maintains 260 collegiate chapters with 200,000 members. Last year, members contributed 110,442 volunteer hours across 827 service events and 137 STEM outreach activities. Celebrating the 15th anniversary of its merger with IEEE, the society continues to emphasize professional practice and meritorious work within the engineering community.
7Bridging the Digital Divide
The Connecting the Unconnected Challenge solicits innovative solutions to expand global internet access. Recent winning projects include solar-powered community broadband in Tanzania and FM radio-based internet access methods. These strategies leverage existing rural infrastructure to deliver essential medical and communication services to isolated populations, demonstrating scalable models for global connectivity.
8Climate Mitigation and Advocacy
IEEE positions itself as a neutral authority in climate mitigation discussions, with leaders participating in COP30 and the International Symposium on Achieving a Sustainable Climate. During the 2024 Climate Week NYC, young professionals engaged in over 600 activities. These efforts emphasize the role of technical knowledge exchange in developing sustainable climate solutions.
