Surfboard waste transformed into design objects

Discarded resin and fiberglass find new life in unique furniture pieces.

1Giving waste a second chance

Hall 5 studio collects leftover resin and fiberglass from surfboard production, transforming them into furniture and everyday objects. In their Zarautz workshop, they explore how industrial waste can become aesthetic and functional items. Ignacio's 30 years of surfboard manufacturing experience forms the foundation of this innovative project.

2The material's journey

Polyester resin used in surfboard production solidifies on work tables, becoming waste. Hall 5 team collects this material to create new products. Clear resin develops a bluish tone, while colored varieties carry traces of previous productions. Each piece thus features a unique color combination.

3Two distinct collections

The Essentials series crushes resin blocks into granules mixed with epoxy. These terrazzo-like products contain 50% recycled material. The Unic-oh! series features manually broken colored resin pieces cast in molds. These one-of-a-kind items can contain up to 70% recycled content.

4Value of craftsmanship

All production follows artisanal methods. Resin fragments are manually broken with hammers and carefully arranged in molds. This approach, unlike mass production, gives each piece unique character. Visual traces of surfboard production become defining features of the designs.

5Sustainable design example

The project demonstrates how industrial waste can become valuable products. It offers creative solutions to the surf industry's waste problem while providing consumers with sustainable design objects. Each piece carries a story about its material origins.

6Circularity in design

Hall 5's work embodies circular economy principles in design. Transforming waste materials into high-quality products creates an inspiring model for the industry. This approach reduces environmental impact while enhancing the value of local production.
