1The Rise and Fall of Manual Transmissions

In the past, manual transmissions were cheaper and more common than automatics. However, today the situation has reversed, and manual transmissions have become a specialty option. This is particularly evident in the hot hatch segment. In the U.S., only three brands offer manual performance hatchbacks: Honda, Acura, and Toyota.

2The Role of Honda and Acura

Honda's Civic Type R and Acura's Integra Type S stand out in the manual hot hatch segment. Acura, as Honda's luxury brand, builds the Integra Type S on the Civic Type R's platform. Both models share a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, showing that Honda holds two-thirds of the manual hot hatch market in the U.S.

3Toyota GR Corolla's Unique Approach

Toyota's GR Corolla offers a unique performance with its 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive system. Producing 300 horsepower, this model starts at $39,920, making it one of the most affordable options. Toyota also attracts attention with the limited-edition GR Corolla GRMN.

4Volkswagen and Mini Abandon Manuals

Volkswagen, a pioneer in the manual hot hatch segment, removed the manual option from the Golf GTI and Golf R models for the 2025 model year. Mini also dropped manuals from the 2025 Cooper JCW and other models. These decisions are linked to manual transmissions' share in the U.S. market dropping to 0.6%.

5The Future of Manual Transmissions

The future of manual transmissions remains uncertain. While there are some positive signs, such as manual orders accounting for 41% of Volkswagen's final-year Golf GTI sales, this demand is not enough. Gen Z's interest in manuals rose from 0.9% in 2021 to 1.7% in 2023, but this increase failed to convince automakers.

6Subaru's Return to Manuals

Subaru announced plans for three manual models in 2027, including a five-door performance hatchback. However, this announcement currently applies only to the Japanese market. If these models come to the U.S., the manual hot hatch segment will have four brand options.

7The Importance of Manual Transmissions

Manual transmission vehicles offer drivers greater control and driving enjoyment. However, advancements in automatic systems and the rise of electric vehicles have cast doubt on the future of manuals. This makes preserving manual transmissions in performance vehicles even more critical.

8The Sustainability of Manual Transmissions

The future of manual transmission vehicles depends on broader automotive industry trends. The rise of electric vehicles and the proliferation of automatic systems make it difficult for manuals to sustain long-term viability. However, the presence of brands like Honda, Acura, and Toyota in this segment suggests manuals will endure for a while longer.
