1New Credit Layer on XRP Ledger

Ripple, Clearpool, and Cicada Partners are launching an institutional credit system on XRP Ledger (XRPL) based on real business activities. Clearpool, which has arranged over $930 million in institutional loans since 2021, will build the infrastructure using XRPL's native lending protocol XLS-66 and Single Asset Vaults (XLS-65). Cicada Partners, with $860 million in credit experience, will identify borrowers and monitor credit performance.

2Ripple's Investor Role

Ripple will participate as a limited partner in the credit fund. Funding will be directed to fintech companies, payment providers, and crypto businesses using stablecoins. RLUSD will serve as the program's credit asset and provide a direct link to Ripple's stablecoin ecosystem. This model offers liquidity to borrowers while allowing investors to remain active in XRPL infrastructure.

3Real-World Yield in DeFi

The new model focuses on lending to companies with actual financing needs, unlike current DeFi mechanisms, which generate 98% of yields from speculative strategies like arbitrage and basis trading. Cicada believes this approach could increase institutional participation. Lenders can evaluate borrowers, set terms, and track repayments without relying on volatile crypto market incentives.

4Institutional Controls and Security

XRPL's institutional features, such as Permitted Domains, Credentials, and Clawback, will streamline participant verification and asset management. The proposed credit architecture will manage loans, repayments, and liquidity accounting at the ledger level. These controls aim to enhance the system's reliability and transparency for institutional users.

5Technical Process and Testing

Clearpool continues integration testing on XRPL Devnet. Technical demonstrations will showcase processes like credit pool creation, borrowing, and repayment. However, the Lending Protocol and Single Asset Vault changes still require community voting and have not yet been deployed on XRPL Mainnet. As a result, the institutional credit system is not yet operational.

6Addressing Market Gaps

The partnership targets one of DeFi's biggest shortcomings: yield based on real business activities. While current DeFi models rely on speculative mechanisms, the new approach focuses on companies' actual financing needs. This could reduce institutional investors' exposure to crypto market volatility and create a more stable financial ecosystem.

7The Role of RLUSD

RLUSD will serve as the program's primary credit asset, integrating with Ripple's stablecoin ecosystem. This will simplify stablecoin liquidity access for borrowers while keeping investors engaged with XRPL infrastructure. RLUSD's role in the credit program strengthens Ripple's position in payment and financing solutions.

8Significance of Institutional Participation

This new credit model on XRP Ledger could encourage institutional investors to enter the crypto market with confidence. Loans tied to real business activities aim to reduce speculative risks and create a more stable financial ecosystem. This development may position XRPL as a key platform for institutional financing in the blockchain space.
